So I'm working on my alien hunting skills and counting on being able to board to win. Ive currently got a pilot, templar and MO on board. Would it be better to exchange one of these for an Alien Vet? Which one?

Id get an MO, Templar and Bodyguard.
MO is best for board transitions and morale, templar is best for dueling, especially vs aliens, andd they both help with boarding upgrades. And bodyguard is a third officer that does boarding. Bodyguard also helps with patrols, so more aliens when you patrol dead planets. The Alien Vet I havent noticed a difference for boarding, even vs aliens. And he reduces morale vs non-aliens, so he actually hurts you when you are fighting regular enemies. Though he does help find aliens for dead planet patrols and signficantly increase the pay for destroying alien ships.
Pilot won't help for boarding unless the enemy rams. Then Pilot helps alot.

Thanks @fix. I guess I hadn't used the Bodyguard, as I assumed she primarily helped with protecting the captain from getting injured while boarding and not so much offensively. That's important but I didn't see it as important as being able to deliver as much damage as possible. Another question, what type of boarding do you use against the alien, sustained boarding or board>retreat>board again? I was keeping the pilot, because I'm following slawyer's advice on allocating xp, keeping stealth and warrior at %110 of level. I find this still allows me to escape aliens that are extremely above my level if I have a lot of sails. So my pilot skill is low and I'm making up for it with the pilot officer and upgrades like the Advanced Bridge. I may send him packing though for a bodyguard. "Die and learn" right.

My stealth was at about 150% lv one time, and I couldn't escape from aliens. On impossible difficulty, aliens can be upto 400% your lv, and therfor can have stealth over 250% your lv, depending on AI. Cory intentionally made stealth count twice as much as other skills so that you wouldn't be able to invest in stealth enough that you could retreat from all enemies. The fact thst slawyer didn't die yet is partly due to luck.
Bodyguard increases HP damage to enemy - more HP damage to enemy = less time for the enemy captain to get killed = faster win. But for HP damage vs aliens, at least from an offensive standpoint, templar would be better.
The only officer that does damage is MO for board transitions. The other officers don't do damage to the ship, but damage to the captain, causing more wounds to the enemy captain.
It depends on your build. But I would use sustained, only because it may be very hard to retreat at zero range against enemies that are much higher than you.
For board strength: Warrior, Strength, Crew Numbers, Weapons, Tactics, Intimidate, Morale, Hull, Engines, Upgrades, Officers (in that order). Battle Prow, Leviathan, Attack Shuttles, Mercanaries and possibly Battleship are best for offensive. Id get a carnifex if I were you, or if that's too much fuel consumption, the royal battlecruiser or cadar flagship.

@starfixer thanks again for the advice. This beauty went down pretty easy with a templar, MO and body guard. I was at lvl 25 or 26. I also took out a Narv Hive about my level. It was the first I've seen. 1000 crew yikes! I battled till I was the last man standing. They still had 839 crew and I had 1 but I killed their captain. Attachments:

100 torps and 100 sails? Now that's the type of ship you won't be escaping from... in one piece
Wait, the enemy had over 800 crew and you had 1? How many crew did you have to start with?

That's the final score. My ship was in perfect order when we started. Attachments:

You need more warrior and strength. This time you only encountered a hive that was your level. Next time, you may not be so lucky
Also, Id get a crew upgrade like battleship or mercenaries, or get a bigger crew ship. If you still want fast speed, get dragon cruiser. If you can settle for medium, get battle frigate or cadar flagship. And if you want fast and quick, get omega cruiser, but the omega has high fuel-consumption.
