In any event, I'm taking a break from my alien hunter for a while. Tracking down a Hulk is just too random and time consuming, and there's a significant chance that, even if I do find a hulk, it'll just run away. I'm hopeful that later updates will bring in mays to make that sort of hunt easier (perhaps via the other alien unlocks).
With all of the unlocks (except the two hulk-related ones) taken care of, I'm now playing a straight up bounty hunter with no weird goals to worry about, for the first time.

Ok, I think it's time to retire my "Ahab" and start over. He's at 550AE or something and hasn't seen an alien in over 100 years, despite having a xeno vet and carrying 50 artifacts in the hold without the Isolation Chamber. I know that he would probably not survive any encounter he would have, but it's better to go out in a blaze of glory than to die an old man tossing and turning in your bed raving about Narvidian dreams. He encountered 5 aliens in his career and 3 hives, but they were all around 10x his level. I abandoned patrolling and tried just "trolling" red squares to see if I could get a random encounter. I would normally fly between Gamdolore and Roavin and all the other planets in that huge red area in the lower left of the quadrant. I didn't have a single encounter despite years flying in the red with artifacts. Makes me think that it's not just difficulty of patrols that gets more difficult, but that aliens actually become more rare. Perhaps they are actually being pushed out by the new inhabitants of the quadrant.
