What was your score xdesperado? I'd post it if I were you, this challenge is hard enough that you could still take it away! Highly doubtful...only added about $50,000 to what I posted above. Otherwise number of destroyed and looted ships was the same. Talk about a cold shot, just hit level 16 and things were looking decent then blam game over. LOL Oh well maybe I'll have better luck in the next challenge.

@x that's rough! Permadeath is so great and terrible all at the same time. My captain is finally going well at lvl 13. He seems invincible, but I know you never really are. I've got a nice screen shot of my new ship. Some idiot Cadar bounty hunter let his boy take his hot-rod out on a hot date. Unfortunately for him, he met me. I barely scratched his toy taking it away from him. Attachments:

Hey Xdesperado - wanna try a second captain playing at the Hard difficulty? Technically since there are two classes of the game, you might be able to have a second competitor. Lurker is our arbiter but it makes sense to me and my cat.

I'm fine with that, though I would be sad if that means you're not going to play in the Titan class as well.

I'm playing both classes just because stupid DP Bluebeard started out in Hard rather than Crazy (stupid Pirate) I was suggesting XDesperado play on the lower level of challenge because he completed the Crazy difficulty one by dying prematurely.

Well since Nigel was a Crazy Titan I'm not sure it would be right for me to take another shot at this challenge on an easier setting. He was doing quite well with my strategy and really I put his death down to sheer bad luck of the dice rolls and not a serious flaw in my game play. Not trying to sound like super gamer here but think using the same kinds of strategy on an lower difficulty would make it too easy to thrash the Quadrant. Part of the reason I started playing on Crazy and Insane levels was to provide myself more of a challenge. The easier difficulties were good for learning the fundimentals of the game but at a certain point you get to that realization that a captain on lower levels will never face much in the way of serious oposition again once he clears the lowest levels. Of course that's partly because of the kinds of captains and style of play I enjoy. Still haven't gotten a good explorer type down even though many swear they are the easiest to do well with.

For me, Explorers are a great short-game captain type, providing great bang for buck for the first 3,000 - 5,000 turns. After that time, exploration becomes much higher risk than return and you end up playing any number of alternate playing styles. That can be true of almost any captain type though - where you lean heavily on the benefits the captain offers, but by the long game, you have to evolve to meet the new demands and challenges.

I have to add that it's so fantastic that there are lots of brave captains dread pirates out there who are joining in with the challenge. It's way more interesting seeing how everyone fares and getting the progress reports from those who are succeeding - and those who bit the torp.
I hope that you are finding the challenge as much fun as I am - both as a player, and as part of a fantastic community of like-minded pirates!

Wow, so much going on since I last checked in! Sorry to hear your career has ended, xdesperado. You should still post your score on the official thread, as you do have a pretty high loot number (more than me for sure). You never know when our captains are gonna bite the dust! ;D
I find one of the biggests challenges so far for me is not being able to buy any ship I want. Having to capture a better ship means you either have to be lucky and run into a low level, or be really good at fighting (and not get attacked after capturing until you get a chance to repair). Another issue is the focus on attacking ships, preferably without making yourself an enemy to too many factions at a time. It's best when you are in control of which target to loot, rather than getting hostile encounters left and right. I'm keeping to my usual strategy of high stealth and warrior, with trailing pilot and tactics. For this challenge, I've foregone my usual escape shuttle for a leviathan system, since I'm not too focused on long-term survival here. Let's see how long Metalbeard will last!

Yup, no point in having an escape shuttle, because like the last challenge, you're screwed if you end up in your shuttle.

Yup, no point in having an escape shuttle, because like the last challenge, you're screwed if you end up in your shuttle. Actually Nigel would have been just fine if he had reached his escape shuttle. Part of the reason he only had $133,000 in the bank at death was because he had a fully upgraded Pirate Ripper in dock on Thulun-Prime. Buying that even with rank 17 and negotiate 10 set him back over $200,000 for the ship before upgrades. Figure the Extended Gun Deck, Advanced Bridge and Predator Tracking Array ran close to another $150,000 and that's $350,000 sitting in the dock instead of making money. Then both the Scimitar Class and Royal Lifter had all those same upgrades as well as the Serpent's Tooth he started with and you have another $400,000+ in upgrades alone. Doesn't cover the normal costs of constant repair of battle damage, and any money spent on upgrades is essentially lost when you decide to commander a new ship after a battle...

Wasted almost half the lifetime of the challenge already (turn 4500), but finally bought my dreamship Pirate Transport. The reign of terror begins, muahahaha...

I'm also finding the ship thing to be one of the biggest challenges. I worked through a sale of 76 ships and there wasn't a single pirate ship in the lot. I've got one mediocre ship in dry dock and I'm flying the sniper class that I stole.
Its also going to be interesting to see what strategy prevails in terms of aggressiveness. Will the stars that burn brightly, looting ships at an incredible rate and making enemies of everyone survive long enough to outscore the more conservative players who make it to turn 10,000?
Roberts is burning brightly, making enemies of Cadar and De Valtos, trying to decide if he should stay on Rychart's good side or not. I'm at turn 2070 and have looted 78 ships and have around 250k in the bank.

Wow, at the rate you guys are going, I really have to take it up a notch to Pan-Galactic A-hole and get more looting. I only have 129 so far (even though it feels like a lot more). I'm only enemies with Steel Song and Rychart at the moment, but things will change soon... ;D

Holy crap, think things were changing a little too fast... apparently, traveling to the lower left quadrant is a very bad idea when you are a hated enemy of Steel Song. Especially bad when you decide to attack (or get attacked) by almost every ship encountered.
Was down to 4 crew and almost died from boarding, but managed to sneak into the two SS planets and recover half my crew numbers. The adventure continues...
