Hey, all!
I just had a bloody battle with Steel Song and thought: What if I could steal a ship of any faction, most possibly a freighter because it'd less likely be controlled as it doesn't have as much guns on it as a warship, and then could sneak into the Trade Center and THEN I could steal goods from the faction! Only possible with a high amount of stealth Skills.... Waddayathinkboutit, bruh?

Maybe it would be better with the spy class.
Lets say you find a nice looking Steel Strong Military Patrol Ship, take it and use it to impersonate a low level military officer which facilitates entry into their planets.
Maybe take a few of their missions to raise your rep, or maybe they wont notice if you've squatted 3 years on their home planet stock piling records from orbit, all they see is just another patrol ship on duty.

Sounds pretty cool - but I'd say you can't do it if your rep is too low with them (if they really hate you, they'd probably recognise you from your voice or flight style).

Okay - for me to get my head around it, You are a Cadarian captain with a very -ve reputation with Steel Song (of course). Normally, if they saw you, they'd kill you on sight, and would block their market, palace, and space port from access. Now you cunningly take over a Steel Song ship, and assume the identity of their captain (I won't go so far as to suggest you'd peel the skin off their still twitching corpse because that's just revolting) ... but you pretend to be them, and if the ruse works, you should have access to the Exchange at a very minimum. I'm guessing that you won't have access to the space port or the Palace due to slightly more robust record keeping? Whilst it would be an interesting idea, there are a number of limitations and issues. First is the fact the game engine itself wouldn't cope with the concept - things would break and so unfortunately the idea is kind of moot until a future (ST2) type product. Secondly, the game does take into account the flag of the ship you are flying. You probably don't notice, but there are some dice rolls that have the ship flag as one of its calculations. If you are flying a Steel Song flagged ship landing at a Steel Song planet, you get more favorable results. Where is the flag of your ship? If you go into your "Status", then select "Ship", you'll see the ship flag to the right of the ship name. It can be distinctly different from your home-nation's flag. Thirdly, the game universe is more advanced than today's world - everything is tied back to the GovCentral banking system and the Central Database. The Central Database also maintains the Prison Fleet, which extracts Credits to "Protect Justice." One of the big secrets of the ST RPG universe ... - "What is the Central Database?" Especially given that the Law of Shalun dictates that no machine shall be made to communicate with another free of the hand of man. Hmmmmm =) The Central Database explains why you are penalized or rewarded instantaneously when you do particular actions, even if you have acquired a fresh ship. Yes, your wanted flags can disappear with a new ship, but your reputation remains there. You can't get away from the evil eye of FaceBook the Central Database. Even if you did manage to fake being someone else, you wouldn't be able to access their line of credit, and using your own line of credit would be a MASSIVE red flag. Fourthly, if you were able to fake someone else's credentials, get past all the biometric, isotonic, nutragrainic detection methods, it would allow you to too easily avoid factional conflicts - A faction you like is in Trade Embargo with a faction you don't like? Why not take the hated faction's ship, buy from the enemy exchange, and avoid taking the RP hit of your liked faction? Expanding from that idea, you can pretty much do anything you like (good or bad) because it won't be YOUR reputation, but rather the nonamed captain who's skin you just stole! No RP impact = huge game balance issues. Fifthly, (wow, got to #5) if you did steel (haha pun intended) a ship from Steel Song, then you'd have to give up your previous vessel in deep space. I hate abandoning my ships because I am really fussy, so usually only end up with about 4 or 5 ship acquisitions in any given game. The last thing I want to do is take on some inferior Steel Song crap in order to do some back-stabbing. You can't take a ship in the Star Dock - it'd look very suspicious, so it has to be deep space. So I guess in summary (a) the game doesn't support it, (b) the Central Database and GovCentral will pick your deception in a Arghblargles Heartbeat (their hearts can beat up to 400 beats per minute, and they have 4), and (c) it messes up the game balance even if it were possible.

No...I meant with prisoners. That would be awesome. You are paid to float around in space and do nothing, and nobody would dare attack you.

Except for all the hostile factions who have prisoners of war on it and all the pirates who are looking to break their partners out or shut them up permanently...

The 'chameleons' you face on bounty missions seem to do this rather easily though
