I've been playing this game for a few days now, and I just recently made a new Pirate starting at Javat.
I got a rumor that there were Aliens in Deep Space, so I flew out to see what the fuss was about.
After killing some random ships, I came across a Bolllish Carrier, killed it, barely survived, and took the ship.
Now I'm cruising around in it and everything feels easy-mode. I destroy absolutely everything.
Hull: 20 Armor: 20 Engines: 50 Sails: 50 Guns: 20 Torps: 50 Speed: HIGH Agility: HIGH Cargo: 153 (upgraded) Crew: 115
Am I just really lucky to come across this ship? I've been reading the forums and see people having much trouble with the game. I'm kinda plowing through it.
Captain Stats- (Pirate LVL 9)
STR: 12 QCK: 12 WIS: 12 CHA: 12
WAR: 12 PIL: 12 TAC: 7 STL: 1 NEG: 12 INT: 9 EXP: 1
Am I missing something, or just lucky?

It really depends on what difficulty level you're playing at, but some of the lower levels can be quite.... easy. If you find yourself having an easy time it could be time to move up a bit . Just a wild guess, but I think you could stand for going up a couple difficulty levels. Your stats are... ok, but I don't think that captain would survive at a higher difficulty level. TB games tend to run the range from "Man, this game is soooo easy!" to "Ow my pride has been run over and shot." Welcome to the forums, by the way. Hope you stay a while Whoops! xdesperado just showed me up. I guess your stats are pretty good then haha. I don't really know much about boarding style captains

Think you may have encountered a bug there because Alien ships are not suppossed to be able to be used by the players. If you've actually managed to take it as your captains personal ship then you should be able to own anything in the quadrant with those stats. johndramey I was refering to the ship stats not his captain's stats. He'll need to seriously raise his Pilot and Intimidate to keep the ship from eating W-F like crazy and get the most out of it in combat. That said he's got a pretty solid start and an insane ship.

Definitely - capturing an alien ship is not meant to be possible because the interfaces and design are just so, well alien. You know all those alien abduction stories that you hear about where they use probes in rather uncomfortable ways? The misconception is that humans were being experimented on. In reality, the aliens were just testing to see if humans could use the Alien flight controls so they could get cheap crew to man their ships while they relaxed during interstellar travel. resonator, what difficulty are you playing at? If you manage your skills progression well, you should be able to continue your domination - focus heavily on Pilot until it is at least 20 and is around 150% - 200% of your level.

Yeah, I felt it was odd that I was able to take it. Think I'll enjoy it for a long while I'll take a picture of it later. It's a lot of fun! And yes, it CHUGS WF. I can live with that though, need to get my intimidate and pilot skills up to help offset that.

Res are you playing on an iphone/ipad? I think the bug is specific to them. If not, I'll be stopping automatic updates before they get this fixed. Always wanted to fly around in an alien ship.

The good news is that if you have it, no update will take it away from you. In ST, game updates affect NEW SHIP encounters, and have no impact on ships you already have (all ship values/attributes are enshrined within the savegame file).
For TA and CK, this was changed, so an update in a weapon's stats will result in all new AND existing weapons being updated.

I have it on my Nexus 4 (android) and on my iPad. It happened on my iPad.
Also, is there a way to change difficultly after I've started the game or do I need to make a new captain?

You have to make a new captain. Suggest you look in the iOS section and the bug reports to see if anyone else has reported capturing and using an alien ship. If they have bump the thread with a new report, if not then make a new thread reporting the bug so Cory can correct it. In the meantime enjoy your good fortune with that captain.
