+1000 for beam sabres ("lightsabre" is probably copyrighted)
zero from mega man x had one and he was the coolest character in that series and there's even a d&d psionic class that wields a beam of amplified psychic energy they're pretty pervasive in popular culture and are both easy to integrate and highly recognizable (as something universally awesome)
beam sabres are: -awesome -easily concealable -effective against meat and metal targets -cool as hell and -technologically feasible
i mean it doesn't have to be o-p like lucasinian lightsabres are they don't have to be strong enough to cut though blast shields and stuff but a laser cutter with a fixed length is 2 legit 2 quit

we have beam projectile weapons in the nbz, why not beam melee weapons as well :-)
i was thinking:
electrosaber - a flick of a switch on the hilt of the electrosaber uncoils a length of fine steel wire. protecting it from nano-element corrosion is an electric field that renders the wire rigid and visible.

www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/01/13/homemade-9mm-pistol/Give the ingenious amongst us something vaguely resembling a shop and youd never imagine what can be put together. Even in prison cells, homemade muzzleloader handguns have been fabricated. Melee weapons, as you'd imagine, are a bit simpler.

my bad about the beam weapons. i thought the "anti-material weapons" description of the FN PAR meant it was shooting energy in the form of anti-matter haha.

I suppose if we can make contained anti-matter weapons, particle beams shouldn't be too much of a stretch - any anti-matter weapons made in the 21st century are likely to cause planet-destroying explosions, however we've already developed orbital particle beams (The US is making them viable now).

Conversation in Downtown Gateway Brave Star precinct lockerroom between. Lt. McNally dayshift patrol supervisor and Sgt. Oberstein nightshift Gateway Security Post watch commander. "So Obiwan how was it last night out there?" "Same ole boring drek most of the night Mac. You know the usual a Knight in a Hades Hardsuit with a Panther Cannon came in after creating a mess down in Roxbury. Couple of them Irish kids with them big drekin Shock Mauls headed back to Dorchester after tearing things up over at the Silver Silk. Another knight wearing a kraken suit and hauling one a them fancy Yakashima decks headed down towards Kate's after crashing the public term. You know the usual." "Huh, yeah know what ya mean Obi, never any real excitement around here anymore, not like the old days." "Well did have a little excitement just before relief time. Some chummer with one of them passes Texas likes giving out tried coming in carrying a sword. Can you believe that drek? Well I don't care who he does errands for, Mamma Oberstein's liebchen isn't having that drek on his watch! I mean someone could lose an eye or somethan ya know!" "So how'd ya handle it?" "You know the usual way, fired up all the heavy drones and rousted a couple tac teams. Shoulda seen it Mac, they lit that chummer up six ways from sunday, wasn't even enough left to feed the Hunds." "Man you got all the luck, can't even catch a hyperpunk with a butter knife around here during the day..." Got any feature length scripts? This dialogue is priceless

Maybe a nanite blade that identifies and discards the damaged or polluted material and automatically repairs and replicates itself, and itbeing self replicating could make it a sort of metal "lightsaber" which would solve the concealability issue. Obviously would have to be a very high end and high priced weapon, but i would buy it if it cost me half a million yen. I'm just a sword kind of guy I guess. I can't even bring myself to even consider playing as a CyberSword or including them in my team until some type of bladed weapon is included in the game.

Honestly ...
1. it was a style choice -- the NBZ isn't all Seattle/Jonny 2. we didn't make the animation skeletons for swords 3. there isn't a sword skill 4. we spent a lot of time writing them out of the backstory 5. there are OVER 100 swords in Heroes of Steel RPG
over 100. that is a lot of swords!
