I do like the idea, but it sounds complicated to impliment. Slinging weapons of course is good tactical sense but I think theres a limit to realism for the sake of artistic image. (Though the Leviathan sketches I'm working on have the basic weapons on a single point sling)
The defensive bonus for the sword sounds like a no-brainer.

Having the sword work on the off-hand should be a very simple tweak - after all, there are some very cool gloves/fists that work well on the off-hand.
Attacking on the diagonal is also straight forward as all ranged weapons are now capable of diagonal fire (something lacking in early versions of the game).
The trickiest of the first three would actually be adding defensive bonuses because weapons all have common attributes, and defensive bonus isn't one of them. That's an attribute of armor. This means you'd have to add an attribute to all weapons (set at zero), and add +ve values to the swords.

Berserker shields already seem to be weapons with defensive bonuses.

They are more in-line with armor and can't actually cause damage. You can't even use them to thump a Xeno over the head.
