athios - the new island and beach? To be honest, we have changed the "ocean" (and by that I mean deep water and shallow water) yet. We will soon!

I haven't had any issues spotting things, but I'm kind of into the "discerning details from the background clutter" meta-game. If you want them to pop out a bit more, probably better for most players, I might consider adding a border to the town tiles, or maybe some color differentiation. (though you might already have the color differentiation, I'm color-blind to some degree so I probably wouldn't notice it if you do)
