I'm afraid I'm still a little confused. I have a GSM HTC Hero. After booting I have ~35MB spare. Killing processes gives me ~90MB (and a substantial improvement in performance). In other words, ATK is here to stay. I'm often multitasking while a game is in progress and often need to free up some memory. If I quit the game properly and subsequently kill tasks am I adversely affecting my game in any way?

No. Running a Task Killer which kills Star Traders RPG while you are trying to play (or kills services it starts) will adversely effect your game.
It is all in the hands of Android, ST follows all the rules of Android OS and will behave correctly when managed within those rules. I have seen many task killers that do not respect the rules of the Android OS and running those while you are playing will have unknown negative results.

Fluffy head-smacking bears have been known to be the by-products of such unholy desecration.

Way I see it is you can really milk your 1.99 for an amazing gameing experience...or you can use what you learned in this thread n get bored fairly quick.
Plenty of tips for survival in so many threads here....this one is a bit dirty.

Thanks for the clarification, Cory.
It does strike me that you're cheating yourself more than anything by using the task killer to advance. It must be like blockading Thulun planets to lose 19k rep (and I know how that feels) but with more wasted time.
