I was strolling around the galaxy the other day in my convertible Flagship Carrier (a custom job from my mechanic) when I stumbled upon an asteroid field and thought I'd stop for target practice. As I was blasting away, I though "it would be really cool if I could replace all these torpedo bays with guns". Can you imagine how many more asteroids I could blast with that many guns? I mean, I like having 62 guns. I'd like to have 80 (or even 100) with a better targeting system.
Then I thought about how nice it would be to have a tractor beam just like that Kirk guy has on that intergalactic TV show. That way I could pull my targets in closer to me so they could look down the barrels of my shiny guns. Nothing like the expression on an opponent captains face before blasting them.
I almost never use torpedos. I prefer to go in close and target engines so I can take what I want from those pesky pirates and other ships that don't care to respect my awesomeness.
Can I get a U-Haul to tow behind my ship to add cargo capacity? :-)

Tractor beams would be a powerful upgrade for a gun-heavy ship. Very scary! Maybe it would reduce the effective power of the enemy's Engines, or just an extra penalty to the enemy opening range.
I'm not so sure about trading torps for guns though.

If torps could target engines, I'd be all over them. As it is, I usually only use them to even the odds if the other ship is bigger and has less sail power. I'd rather close and wreck engines with guns, too.

I prefer to board and kill the enemy Captain. Maximum New Crew and if you can win without badly harming the ship you can get that 100% salvage bonus =)
Plus it gives me a reason to have 100 Weapons for my 50 Crew

I prefer to not risk my neck in the close quarters battle on the enemy ship. Seems I get hurt really bad compared to what I get.
I'm getting tired of hearing the enemy captain plead with me not to destroy their ship for the salvage value and they keep offering me lots of money to spare them. But I can't take credit cards.

true -- my Pirates captains only upgrade armor, Crew and hold. We pack in weapons, fly on luxury and never learn anything about negotiation or stealth.
"Torps? Turn the battle prow and launch shuttles. You have the bridge, Political Officer. Ready my personal boarding craft and engage!"
