It will count as a weapon if she reads that post, matey!
Boarding is usually a close-quarters combat type of deal. Why do you thing pirates are often depicted with a cutlass in one hand an a musket pistol in the other? Anti-matter epaulet grenades are an excellent accessory.
Go read some Schlock Mercenary and you'll see that melee and ranged combat are not mutually exclusive.

I am 100% a fan on RPGs that combine ranged and melee weapons into one.
The entire pen and paper Star's Edge RPG game that Star Traders comes from includes crazy amounts of mixed combat.
We achieve the mechanic by making reloading hard (recharging mostly) and jams common. The ranged weapons are ancient, powerful and unpredictable. A skilled killer may carry 3 or 4 different types and a few backup hand to hand weapons as well.
It results in duels where the character shoot, drop weapons, draw new weapons and the pace of the battles is very much improved. Multiple fighting styles, skills and ranges are all drawn into a single combat ...!

In a big brawl, you don't just kill the last enemy. First, you make him sweep up the mess at gunpoint.

You usually need a mop though ... brooms just push the blood around and you end up getting streaks. Surprisingly, a fair number of starships carry mops these days - and the airlocks are designed to be easily hosed down. It's as if you are encouraged to do the boarding thing

Hosed down? You don't reclaim that water?
