Masters of Orion is a 4X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion)
Star Traders RPG Is a Role Playing Game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game)
I did not try to make a 4X game. When I try to make a Masters of Orion clone, you will know because it will be a 4X game.
If you care to take my side in this debate then just remember -- Star Traders RPG is NOT trying to be a 4X. It is trying to be a RPG.
Therefore, of course it is the "worst copy ever" of MOO. Yes, it is a terrible copy of Master of Orion. That is like saying that my beat up old truck is a terrible hovercraft.
Heck yes my truck is a terrible hovercraft. Worst hovercraft ever? I don't know, possibly tied with my laptop, which is also a really poor hovercraft.

I dunno, laptops skim across water a heck of a lot further than a truck does, old and beat up or not. I would therefor rank it from worst to best as: - Truck (regardless of condition)
- Laptop
- Rychart hat
- Hovercraft
- and of course Cadar Torp (Cadar Torps trump hovercraft).
Does this mean Cadar Torps are a better MOO equivalent. Hmmm ... perhaps not.

I know the vast majority of MOO games I played were VERY Cadarian in style.
(the odd-ball rarity of a "Hey, I suppose I should try diplomacy once or twice to see how it works" being the exceptions that prove the rule)
That said, who the heck compares an RPG to a TBS?

Wait, what? It's not?
Dang... I guess I can stop researching hovercraft truck tech then. Back to slaughtering my away teams.

MOO was among a groundbreaking wave of games from the early 80s that set the conventions of space-themed strategy games. Of course ST shares some features with it.
If ST is trying to copy MOO, then a helicopter is a "copy" of a submarine.
