Any good tips on these? These are my last unlocks except for the two on impossible. I've killed lots of aliens just can't close with a hive, even at level 1 it seems. Do I need to make a stealth torpedo capt and hope for a lucky opening shot?

Which thread? I've been reading a lot of them and trying to add more Hives to the game's database to make it more interesting.
They key to fighting the existing ones is to remember how Torps work.
Any Torp hit gives you a bonus on the next Action -- so if you can land a Torp hit, closing distance immediately following gets you to medium range.
At that point, you've got a chance go Gun -> Close and start slamming Engines and Decks (depending on which Hive.)

Im trying again with some stealth, last go was all xp to pilot/tactics/warrior. Saw probably 50-60 hives in that crazy difficulty game and they all got away

Pssst. There are other ways to get that hive, but it's something of an exploit. I've got a captain who's bagged over 20 of them. Otherwise, I would also recommend the Null Field Generator and "trolling" over alien rumors rather than patrolling. Trolling is moving repeatedly back and forth over the square rather than sitting on it in patrol. Cory Trese says there should be no difference, but I've found I get a a lot more contacts that way. One of them will be low enough to get, though it took me 9 months of playing more than I should have to finally get one I could catch, a level 70 when I was around 30 or so. As for the Alien. You're looking for a Heela. They're 100 hull and 50 armor and 500 crew. It's slow/low though so you might be able to gun it depending on it's level. Good Hunting

I will go back and triple check for advantages from trolling instead of patrolling. Shouldn't be better, because it's not fun! Let me find out if I can explain the feel you're having.

I haven't test exhaustively Cory, but I'll support the "trolling beats patrolling" theory. My feel has been that either passing through a square or attempting a landing gives you hugely more encounters than patrolling will. The longer the game goes on the more this feels true to me.
(the uselessness of late-game patrolling is why my pirates usually bounty-pirate, getting a contract to kill someone then using a predator array to find ship after ship, which you then board, loot, and release until you're close to timing out the contract at which point you finish it)

nothing scientific as I didnt keep track, but it seems like I saw a lot more aliens transiting between fuel depot and rumor sector than patrolling the rumor sector.

The 2 hive unlocks easy mode. Start as spy, javat, picky beggar. Raise explore to 3 or 4. Explore Javat mining colony planet for 400k-500k. Spend any excess xp on pilot not to go beyond level 2 (think I had explore at 3 and pilot 6). Now buy a fast/quick ship with a decent amount of torps and buy xeno torps, null field generator, and pilot upgrade...went with cargo space other 2 slots. While looking for ships/upgrades check rumors and for officers as well. Go to rumor sector and torch lvl 6 hives easily.

That seems like you really know your stuff and got the better of some aliens!

My tactic is far more advanced. It involves duct tape, a bike horn, a rubber duck, and confetti. Then you just gotta trick Cory or Andrew into leaving their "work space"(it's really just the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese) and......
Wait a minute. I've said too much. Damn!

I wouldnt say that, just realized it's probably easier to catch those skittish buggers when the lvl difference is 2<->6 vs 50<->3000.
