Unless this is purposefully left out as some kind of trade secret, it would be helpful to see some of the rules that govern the combat.
What I love about this game is the richness of the game system which gives it that feel of playing an old paper and pencil RPG game. I thought there would be some guidance in there about combat.
I am kind of new to this game and I have yet to figure out why increasing my crew, upgrading my ship, and raising my captain's strength/warrior scores resulted in me losing most boarding battles when I had been winning almost all of them prior. Stupid me figured 148 crew and larger engines, combined with attack shuttles was going to make for a killer boarding attack. I was sadly mistaken.
On the bright side, I switched to a ship with lots of guns and torpedoes and now have great success at all non-boarding combat.

So far I think Cory's doing a great job of explaining the rationale behind combat without encouraging rampant metagaming.
A prosaic combat guide would be cool, but I wouldn't want the guts of the system laid out.

I'd like to see the Military Officer offer information about your current setup.
"Captain, we've got a lot of crew, but with the demands of these engines, only 20 of them can form a boarding party. I don't advise boarding actions against enemies with more than 30 crew unless we're carrying at least 10 weapons."
