I'm a bit confused by the DC starter ship. It says its a "fast scout ship ideal for Explorers and Star Traders", but I'm not sure how it would work well on an Explorer type.
The DC has 11 hull, 24 engines, 12 sails, Fast agility, Medium speed, 30 crew and 40 cargo.
The cargo is a bit small for an Explorer to use without an in-built water hold and having most of your crew necessary to get full use of your engines is not a great idea when you'll be sacrificing your crews to hungry wildlife. There's also the thought of needing that crew to get in close with an enemy for boarding or whatnot, but (again), a good deal of your crew are likely all ready being sacrificed to wildlife. And an Explorer will likely be better off running away from fights rather than trying to get closer.
If anything, this sounds like an effective gun-bunny ship. But maybe I'm missing something?

As your pilot+tactics+intimidate go up, the less crew you need to run your engines/guns efficiently.
With that said, the amount of engines on that ship is why its good for explorers. With artifacts attaching big ass neon flashing signs on the side of your ship saying "FREE LEWTZ INSIDE!", effectively turning you into an interstellar piñata, you're gonna want some speed churning out of your space boat.

Bwhahahaa, that is true (my explorer isn't the bravest of captains, but his speed in retreats is LEGENDARY), but wouldn't you rather have sails and stealth to both avoid encounters and to leave before/as soon as the fight starts?

Stealth is less effective than beating a hasty retreat with a lot of flair. When I run away, I make sure the ether lights up brighter than the freaking 4th of July.

Err, but don't sails do that job before you get into combat distance? And thanks for the visual of your "ether" glowing like the lights of July 4th...

Where did you get those designs from?

If that was aimed at me, from my webcomic. One of the main characters captains a Danti Cautela.

... that's fucking badass. This is the coolest game community around. If it's public access, could you provide links?
Also, on topic of that cautela. Seems to be the most versatile selection out if the starters.

@officer Genious I have to agree %100 percent with you. I pretty much play Insane all the time now that I have a pretty good grasp of the mechanics of this game and cannot Progress at all with this ship in any class/role.
It cannot outrun anything because of poor sails and it chews W/F like crazy.
I find that on insane there is absolutely no chance of survival using any ship that is not Fast/Quick because they just get creamed way too easily and cannot escape anything.
(Just made a nice short trip loaded with plants to end a shortage and got 1au away and then a pirate who was 2 lvl below me destroyed most of my Guns and Sails with 1 torp and proceeded to close and Rape me, no choice but to surrender, beyond financial recovery after they took 300% of their hold capacity of plants off my ship. Pretty much game over Suicide rammed the next ship encountered )
I try to mix up my starting build but just cannot go past Tempis Fugit or any custom design as long as Sails/Engines= 2xhull.
It is the only ship/configuration I can survive/prosper with.
Are there any other Insane players who have had success with this ship, or any other ships that are not Fast/Quick for that matter??
edit : I will try another game and focus on combat abilities with DC and see what happens.

In fact, it's pretty much the only starting ship I ever use because I always avoid fighting in the beginning. Just don't carry stuff worth stealing and surrender when necessary. Don't bother replenishing torpedoes. Start accumulating trade permits and once you have enough of them do whatever you need/want to after that. Of course, if you want to fight people you'll eventually want a different ship ...
