A more defensive choice, right? More magical, maybe?

A more defensive choice, right? More magical, maybe? Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using proboards The staff is a unique weapon -- it is allowed to act like a shield and may grant a persistent magical effect, like a buff. A weapon may have a magical effect (say, +5 fire damage) that would only be effective if you hit with that weapon. So, if you have a +5 fire damage bow, it does not grant you +5 fire damage to your dagger attacks. This is why burning blades is so freaking good. It buffs everything, from arrows to fire spells (AoE included!) So a staff (or a shield) can grant that type of universal buff (think 'Shield of Thunder' for the sorcerer that buffs all of his attacks, melee and ranged.) There is, in E1A1, a reward staff that shows this feature off. I believe that it grants Spirit Points which are persistent like Armor or a Ring, unlike a normal weapon. A sorcerer who carries a staff may ultimately be more like the Wizard -- less combat oriented and more focused on arcane talents.

Well, shields (unlike weapons) can have always on magical buffs so, yeah, shields are awesome. +2 Parry from a shield is very good -- it works against all types of attacks. +3 Parry from a dagger is good, but not as good as a shield and it cannot give buffs, so yeah, shields. The balancing system all of the above into account, you're just looking at the tip of the iceberg and estimating the balancing value of shields without seeing the full scope of what they're capable of. Also, don't discount shields as improving your ability to soak ranged damage. Thanks, I figured there was stuff that we weren't seeing in the stats. I'm still thinking of trying out that dagger as a second weapon for Vraes if he can even use light blades. Currently he doesn't take a lot of damage from archers because of stone skin and other buffs so it's not that big of a deal to have something that blocks ranged attacks. Can Vincent double wield two light blades? In episode 1 are there shields that have magical buffs that could be found in a chest? I haven't seen any yet. Actually I've never seen any shield in a chest.

contributor - Vincent can only use a single blade (Light or 1-H) or a staff. He is a light melee combatant.
