Slayernz, I like that Idea. It makes sense to me, as currently the only way to get positive rep with more than one faction at a time is via a "Trade Alliance" - which is kind of the only "conflict" that is positive in nature. When I first started playing STRPG, I assumed Alliance was similar to what you described only to realise very quickly I was mistaken. I guess from my perspective Alliances should be all encumbering, and so you lose rep but should also gain it depending on whether you offend the alliance or compliment it. By complimenting an alliance though you will surely lose rep with at least one other faction anyway as in your example you will lose rep with Steel Song and if they are allied their allied faction(s) also.
I suppose when I posted originally I was a bit annoyed that I lost more rep with an allied faction than the faction I actually offended - and I can understand that notion from what Cory said but at the same time this positive rep In an alliance would be a good for the game balance as well (IMHO).
After all even with a Trade Alliance you don't get rep without selling Artifacts, Weapons or Electronics but with a Trade Embargo - you can't even get water-fuel without losing rep & no gain for the faction you bought it from due to the Embargo. In some ways the game is a bit loss focused in the political/conflict arena.
I'm not saying the last bit should be changed just mention it as evidence of my reasoning towards agreeing with slayenz that Alliances should perhaps have both negative and positive rep outcomes.
Yeah I agree, "the enemy of my friend is my enemy" expression should apply
