Hello all!
Been lurking the forums for a few days, gathering hints and tips where I can.
I actually downloaded and played the free version of the game a few years back when it first came out but put it down for some reason. Well, here I am again (this time with the paid version), and the updates I've seen are pretty stellar!
Being a fairly neonate captain I've been tinkering with some of the easier awards, gaining unlocks here and there. My current (living) captain is a lvl 15 Javat Explorer on Challenging. I'm zipping around in an upgraded Cutter, and haven't run into many problems yet. I've done plenty of contracts and plenty of exploring, keeping rep up with most factions (I have trade permits with all 6).
I realize there's so many ways to play this game, and so many avenues for your Cap to travel down. I suppose my real question is what do you explorers out there do in your downtime? After tapping most of the decent wild zones for goods and waiting for them to replenish (they do replenish right?), or waiting for those damn embargoes to settle what should I be doing?
No, let me rephrase that...what can I be doing? I guess I'm just looking for new options. For reference it is stardate 125.39 and I have over 1 million credits.
Thanks!
PS - Is there an easy way to determine how long your Captain has lasted? Or do you just have to do the math from the current stardate?

... Phew, I'd say: Up the Difficulty. Start a new Captain. Try a new Profession. Uhm, what else? ... Maybe even change the Game? Ofc only TB Games. I've found Cyber Knights quite entertaining.... And still do. If you've got some other Questions, there's an entire Forum here to answer your Questions. Sent from my broken HTC Desire C using proboards. Anyone's got a fan?

PS: When you want to see how many Turns your Captain has lasted...
ST Main Menu → Roster, choose a Captain, then → View. That will tell you everything the Game knows about your Captains...

krauser, welcome to the forum! It's great that you're doing pretty well with ST and finding your way. Because ST is not bound to a specific story, you can pretty much set your own agenda. In terms of "what do I do now" though, have you looked at all of the awards that you can achieve ... and things that you can unlock? Go into any palace, enter the halls of records, and record your exploits. You can see all the things you've achieved, and also you can see all the things that are still left to do. Playing on Challenging Difficulty is great, but that means you have oodles of unlocks at higher levels that you have yet to do Playing at higher difficulties almost creates a whole new game because unless you've actually learned from the game, going up difficulties is normally a brutally short experience ... so playing at Crazy, or Insane, or Impossible is both frustrating but ever so satisfying at the same time. You've truly taken off the kid gloves, and tried to swallow them whole under 240 feet of water using 8 foot long skewers as eating utensils. Oh, also in the halls of records, you can see your Captains Score (you can also see your score from within the game UI when you are flying as well by pressing the menu button (3 dots), "More", then "Score"). In the score, you can look under the category of "In Victory". You can see how many game years you have been playing. Finally, if you are still at a loss as to what to do next, within the forum, we've been doing some community challenges to help spice things up. The challenges include doing things that you would normally not even think of ... eg the first challenge was getting your reputation down as low as possible with ALL factions at once. How long do you think you can last being the scum of the quadrant! Another challenge was to take on the role of a pirate, and limit yourself to marauding rather than trading/exploring for price gain. We've got a challenge coming up - I am meant to be organizing it (oops). Look out for it and see if you're up to the challenge. I've read thru all the awards a few times, and man some of those are are doozies. Good suggestion though. I've got a long way to go, but I started with ship unlocks. I was wondering about a career change for my Explorer, since none of the wilds want to cough up artifacts anymore. Now though, I think I'll just set him aside for a bit and start fresh at a higher difficulty. Those challenges sound fun, looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Explorers are great for starting off and learning the game because they can get a chunk of money early on with little pain. However, as you get to grips with the rumors, esp shortage rumors, you can normally make hundreds of thousand of credits within the first couple of years with even less risk and pain Pirates and Spies are both exceptional classes to play because thy both give you high pilot and stealth or tactics. If you are more of a "boarder" type captain, then there are lots of other classes and techniques. I'm more of a gun bunny with an aversion of actually stepping onto an enemy ship until they are defeated.

so how long do people tend to play an average game of st then until you consider either changing to a new captain or doing a game entirely? considering that this game looks to be open ended, you can take it as far as you want to go i guess.

Was there ever a better investment of 3 bucks? Nope, no way.

I usually play to Level 50 on Impossible, and then start a new Captain. My strategies tend to change with each character, so to keep things straight in my head I use a name for a strategy (Vega = Clan Loyalist Bounty Hunter, Boarding Specialist vs. Vincent = Syndicate Military Officer, Torp Specialist)
After 50 or so levels, I'm either dead or starting the long grind to 100, which I only do about one out of every 10. Switching it up lets me play new strategies and revisit the higher risk levels of 1-10

For the lower difficulties, I consider level 20-30 enough time spent for you to learn some new strategies or game mechanics knowledge from your current game, especially if you are finding the game easy. For Crazy and above, I would just say play until you are starting to get bored of the play style. No one says you need to abandon your character forever, so you can always come back later to continue on. Attempting certain awards/unlocks will force you to learn and adapt strategies to cope with whatever conditions you are trying to reach, and are a good way to get better at the game.
