The more I play STRPG:E the more things I think of yhat migjt make the game better(more fun)
1. A custom class where the player can allocate the initial points as he/shedesires
2. Something that could extend the captains life, either an increase in hit points as one levels up or perhaps purchase of body armor/space suits with differing level of goodness.
3. As previous mentioned elsewhere the ability to tow a defeated ship to port, or if u have the first mate and crew to spare make repairs and use the first mate and a skeleton crew to pilot along, much like done in traditional naval scenarios.
4. Flags or some way (halo/glowing circle/colored atmo) to tell a planets faction by glance.
5. U can act against independats in missions and piracy, does this make them more likely to attack you or raise prices? If so would b nice to be able to track rep with the indies.
6. Conquer a planet and start your own empire?
7.... runnin out of time at the moment, will add more as they come. Cheers!

1. Choose star trader, good broad skills.
2. Yes.
3/4 Already mentioned.
5. An independent captain is literally that. Just you, your ship and no one to back you up.
6. Been disscussed. Answer was "not possible" but there will be bases that the player can create.

Bases sounds cool.
Another question i have is, do good captains die of old age? Or does the game simply continue until death finds you? If age is a concern, as it probably should, could have a deal where you hand the ship off to one of you officers.
"I'm not the real Dread Pirate Robert, and neither was the dread pirate Robert before me, he inherited just as u are..."
Edit: Oh yeah, i was thinking with the custom class option there could be other *bonus* attributes, say perhaps the ability to navigate werth a darn making better use pf your fuel, a marksman who is better at connecting the torp to the blip in the Mr. Radar.

Captains dying of old age is where "realism" starts to negatively influence "fun."

Of course if there's an expensive way to stave off old age with implants and doctor visit, it could be a nice way to push urgency in the late game.
If I need 500,000 space bucks to pay the space-doctor, I might take a riskier contract or make a big sale under embargo that I'd otherwise not.

After finding myself on a backwards planet (read: thulun controlled) in a ship with more holes than Obamas healthcare plan, no cargo to sell, no contracts available, and no W-F if there was i thought, "man, wish i could take put a small business loan with high interest..."

Loans would be cool.
I'm working towards another game where you can control vast fleets.
Capture and tow is coming, I think as part of a Pilot or Pirate officer?

I find myself wanting to make a version of the game that is more "Pirates of the carribean" themed. Im not sure if vaste fleets would be awesome or just a handful of ships would be best. I thought worm holes would be pretty nifty, could open up the vastness of the game if you warped to a different map altogether, though it would greatly increase the size and scope of the game. but even wormholes that could jump you from one corner of the map would be neat, even if they were tolled... can i get EZ pass for that? (most people might not get that reference...oh wells) I read this thread startradersrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=484 and it got me thinking. the practice of hanging out around the javat mining colony and making cash works wether you are killing the app or not, but its not just that one zone, belix free II is a reasonably good money maker as well as kalflange outpost. I have found most of my success in the game by exploring those planets and selling the loot either at independants or to whichever house I need / want to boost my rep in. the extent of the "normal" missions I do is just enough to get a trade permit in a house, unless I can get it via the boost in rep from a trade alliance. I am doing this now on crazy as it is a fairly safe way to get ahead, I have not milked it to the extent of the OP. What made me want to opine was Cory's response about not doing "normal" ST:RPG activities. What is "normal" for an explorer character this seems to be normal, find a productive farm field and farm it, sell the crops to the market place. I find myself buying plenty of W-F from the independents when the local houses are involved in trade disputes and buying there cheaper would hurt my rep. Otherwise I stockpile W-F in the caches and refill my ship from there as needed. I have left that location in search of more crew, or to find the right upgrades. The exo planetary crawler is nearly hard to find. I think there should be some sort of shop somewhere you can get any upgrade, anytime, even if that means a heavily inflated cost. I would pay 100k cred. for one if it meant not having to waste time and money reading worthless rumors or wasting fuel going to every urban zone in turn and crossing my fingers. not every class in the game needs to traverse deep space or go off on contracts, being an explorer, why waste time on contracts after you get your trade permits? maybe we should have contracts that involve going to search specific planets for mystical objects? contracts that involve not just capturing or destroying a criminal, but how about capturing a ship? would work if the tow option gets implemented... the term "normal" just struck me sideways

Yeah - galactic mail order with at cost delivery for everything from ships to cargo, at a huge premium and an uninsurable risk of 'lost' in the mail. Frequent buyer discounts for Pizza. I have left that location in search of more crew, or to find the right upgrades. The exo planetary crawler is nearly hard to find. I think there should be some sort of shop somewhere you can get any upgrade, anytime, even if that means a heavily inflated cost. would also be super if you could rip an upgrade out of a ship you have in dry dock and have it installed on your current ship... as you can see, I am well capable of wishing

I was thinking, an upgrade, or purchasable item that takes up space in ship and provides a bonus.
Still suits / space suits to negate effects of running out of W-F, dune reference so mighg not b able to call em still suits.
