Why is it that the rank shuttle is more expensive than the starting ship?
Surely the whole point of a rank shuttle is for when your ship is shot to hell and you can't afford the repairs or water-fuel.
Unless I am mistaken, that should always be an option, no matter what ship you have, even if you are using a rank shuttle.
After all isn't a rank shuttle designed for officers to be able to do some short range contracts to get the officer back on their feet?
So why is it that you have to pay through the nose for a ship that is designed for an emergency?
What do you guys think?

Of course it costs to upgrade no matter what your rank

The rank shuttle is worse than the starting ship. So you would be downgrading not upgrading.

In what situation is the Rank Shuttle more expensive?

Literally, you cannot trade in the starting ship for a rank shuttle. Isn't the whole point of a rank shuttle a fall back? So theoretically any ship should be swappable for a rank shuttle.

Cory, the situation is that people are comparing the trade-in value for the starting ship to the buy price of a factory-reconditioned dealers' special shuttle.
The sell price of your ship seems to be typically around 25% of buy-new prices, so that is why the shuttle seems more expensive than the Vae. Maybe there should be a "hire shuttle" service whereby you can hire a shuttle for $5,000 for every year of game play. After all, you almost never buy a shuttle to keep as your pride and joy.
Does Negotiation skill help influence the buy and sell prices of star ships?

How fortunate. I was just popping in to start a similar thread.
I've been trying make a go of a game on impossible using the crappiest ship I can find, but because of the low starting ship resale values it means spending the first few years of the captain's career trying to mug shuttles instead of just downgrading at star dock.

If you're an explorer, or if you find a couple of good shortage/surplus situations within say about 10 AU of your current location, you can normally get to $100k within a pretty short time. You can also get turned into swiss cheese as well, but that's just because the Narvidian electronics really just act like a giant tracking device for Aliens to find and eat you.

After looking around, I saw the freighter(s) that are only a little more expensive than the VV. But the main post still stands, a shuttle is a fully formed but worse ship than the VV is somehow more expensive than the VV.
Shouldn't prices be determined by stats?

All of the starting ships are designed to equate to about $100,000 worth of value. Unfortunately you never actually see that value when it comes to a trade-in or sale. Haven't you shelled out top dollar for a souped up ship, then 20 turns later, you come across another ship that makes you just drool? You go to the dealer and he says, "sure you can have a trade in - I'll give you $36,000 for it". "Wait a minute," you exclaim, "I paid $215,000 for this beast of a ship, and it's less then 5 months old!" "Oh, sorry, you're welcome to keep the tub, but I can see that you've had a couple of prangs in the thing already - there's an alien tentacle wedged under the bridge window wiperblade".
So the moral of the story is that as soon as the ship leaves the lot, the price drops like a concrete-coated yellow-billed Marwarpler.
If you want something to be worth more than you paid for it - steal it!

Your father voided the warranty. That's why the VV is of such low value.
I mean, as soon as you deliver that message -- all hell breaks loose.
Check out turn #1. Peace in the galaxy. The VV is just bad news bears, you stop off at the Prime World, delivery your father's encoded message and ... Trade Wars galore!

I will see what I can do about Rank Shuttle.
My first response was before I understood what was being said, thanks for the explaination -- I get it now. It does make sense that the Rank Shuttle is always equal to the Trade In Value.
However, that would make it a lot easier to get out of the "Oh crap I'm about to die" situation where the ship has 2 Sails, 2 Engine and you're at 3 Health with 1,421 credits.

Hmm sounds like we need a new profession ... Used ship salesperson, unable to reach orbit without getting space sick but can convince you to sell your fully upgraded Jango class for a 20K freshly painted shuttle with racing lines and a funky slogan on the back window....
