Perhaps the Rank Shuttle could be adjusted to be like "Your old ship + a 2,000 credit deposit and you can be a real military pilot!"

Perhaps the Rank Shuttle could be adjusted to be like "Your old ship + a 2,000 credit deposit and you can be a real military pilot!" No, just the old ship. If you need to trade your ship in, you need money for water-fuel.

If you need to trade your ship in for a military shuttle and can't pay for it, you're a bad credit risk and probably a crappy pilot. Time to land on a Wild Zone, set up the moisture wind traps, and bust out the ship's manual. You can get a set of allen wrenches for 5 spacebucks at the counter on your way out.

Translation: buy 3 units of metal, 3 units of crystal. hire a mechanic for $4 and land somewhere remote. Overhaul that beast and get back into the game with a few quick contracts =)

Ha, I thought Alchy said "buy Alien Wenches" ... that wouldn't translate to "hire a mechanic". She probably wouldn't appreciate being called "Alien" ... or "Wench" for that matter Definitely fixing the ship up in the wilderness is a great and viable way of getting yourself out of crap.

For 2% of the profits, I can call Ole Turdlip, "Sally" and he'll like it!
Cory, is there a point to 3 units rather than 1 or 4? i.e. do you get the maximum mechanic bonus from 3?

additional units reduce time of repairs because it will require less on site manufacturing or something

I like the "or something" part of your Rationale Cory Add this to the other "Mysteries of the mechanisms of STRPG" along with Money, the benefits of ole Turdlip, and why all of the good rumors are always more than 20AU from where you hear about them

C'mon ... I'll pay you 50,000 credits for the secret. No deal? How about this mound of ancient artifacts. They're all Atari 2600 cartridges and certified for most shipboard computer interfaces (except Steel Song because they use SECAM)

I wouldn't trade anything to those Steel Song guys. They'll likely take those Atari carts and turn them into shivs and stab you before they get them off the anti-grav pallet jack.

If you ever had a copy of Seaquest thrown at your head, you'd understand that there's no need to modify a cartridge to turn it into a weapon!

The thing that most irks me about ship values is that it is impossible to make a profit off of using a terrible ship to capture a really nice ship and sell it for a profit. I captured a flagship cruiser with an awful ship because it was too slow to avoid engine shots but when I went to sell the flagship cruiser it was worth less than the other ship. Ok let's say that their worth is bad for resale, then something else that could be done is to be able to attach beacon to it so that you could remotely send it to one port of your choosing. That way you stay in your faster ship and sell the other ship for its meager profit.

I agree that you should get better prices than you currently do. Sell price shouldn't be like 25% of buy price. Alternatively, you should at least get reputation/negotiation/rank as ways to make the sell price closer to 70% - 80% of buy.
