I play on a smartphone made by O+, model 8.6, running Android 4.1.1. I am playing a Spy level 29 named "Colin 70" on Crazy difficulty. I have been playing Star Traders Elite for two or three months now with no appreciable difficulties.
Recently I noticed that I was no longer getting messages in the game. For instance; at the exchange the political officer does not warn me of a trade embargo, the spy officer does not warn me of spy battles, and if I make a purchase that violates such a condition I do not get the message about losing faction. The problem is not limited to the exchange. I do not get the message letting me know that training points have reached the set minimum. I get no message when crew dies harvesting ice, or when sails are damaged in a storm, etc. None of the various little information messages that appear as either flying text or popup windows are working on any screen in the game. The popup windows to confirm or cancel purchases, ranks, etc. are still working.
I had been experimenting a bit with the settings to see what they did. I thought perhaps that was the problem. I deleted and re-installed the game to restore the default settings. It did not correct the problem. I created a new character with the same starting options and the problem was manifested in that character as well. I have not tried a new character with any changes in starting options.

@qwestynbeast - can you go into Android Settings > Developer Settings and confirm that nothing is checked? Seems very likely one of those options is enabled, they wreak endless havoc when they are.

Thank you for you reply. As you suggested, I checked the developer settings and none of them are active.

Thank you for you reply. As you suggested, I checked the developer settings and none of them are active. All of the pop-ups use the Android system toast. I wonder if somehow you have disabled that at the OS level?

Would that require root access? I do not have root access. How can I check to see if toasts are disabled?

qwestyngbeast - I don't know how you'd disable them, honestly. Never seen it in my Android, but we support over 5200+ devices, so you never know. It's strange that one day they just stopped working. Something must have happened on that day, and since you've uninstalled and re-installed it sounds like that something is outside of the Star Traders app. I'm guessing and trying to think of a way we can help.

There is one popup still working, come to think of it. When I make a new character the first mate gives his opening speech. He also shows up down in the lower left corner as usual. When I tap that icon his window opens and he gives the usual advice depending on the situation. He seems to be the only officer still talking among the few I have used recently.

@qwestyngbeat - that is a specific type of non-OS toast popup that is used only in that occassion. So, that comes back to "Android OS has disabled toasts" as the single non-toast pop-up works...

That was it! Notifications were not on for the st app. Once I checked the box to enable notifications I made a purchase violating a trade embargo. I received the appropriate popup. Well done! Thank you very much!

I was having this problem as well on STElite on my Moto X. Just figured it out today. I'm glad I got my notifications back, the game wasn't as fun when it didn't tell me about crew dying or sail damage or whatever.

Even if you don't see the notifications because of an Android OS bug or odd setting, you will still be able to access them all in the "Event Log"
