I just unlocked my first ship and it won't let me use it. It still pops up with the notification telling me that it requires the award that I just got. Tried restarting the game & killing off my captain but still the same.
Am I missing something or am I just permanently bugged now so I can't use that ship?

Did you go and claim your award in the hall of Records? If you haven't, then the award doesn't get unlocked.

Yep. Already claimed it and two other awards and I can see them in the main menu under 'Completed Awards.' However, when I try to start a new character and use the new ship (the Aperio Caliga) it just pops up the little notification telling me it requires the award.
It's particularly irritating because now I don't know if any of the other awards I happen to get will actually unlock things for me or if I'll just remain perpetually locked out.

Jaerin,
Hello and welcome to the Star Traders RPG forum. We will do our best to help you out with these awards.
First, I would like to say that in the hundreds and hundreds of people I have helped with the Awards, no one has been perpetually locked out or permanently bugged. The game's internal data format is simple and highly consistent (provided by our dear friends at Google.) You do not need to worry -- your data and Awards are safe.
Now the user interface of Star Traders RPG? Not provided by Google and not always that consistent and simple.
The most common cause of problems with "Hardcore Captain (Level 5)" is the difficulty setting required. The Captain must be on at least Demanding or higher to unlock the ship. If the Award is earned on, for example, the default difficulty of Normal the ship will not be unlocked, however, the Award will still show in your Awards screen (to celebrate the accomplishment, not the unlock.)
If you are unable to unlock the 'Aperio Caliga' starting ship, I suspect that the game's interface has not explained the connection between Awards, Unlocks, Difficulty Levels and Ships. That's my fault and I'm sorry.
I'm here to help if you find that I'm wrong or would like to post some additional details so we can continue to investigate. Thanks again for posting your questions and giving us a chance to figure it out.
- Cory

Are you playing as Rychart or Steel Song? Those two are the black sheep of the galaxy, and nothing works right for them. Well, except for a good torp up the reactor core.
