This may sound trivial, but I would love to see button graphics replace the grey soulless buttons in use throughout the game. Star Traders is such an awesome game, and the graphics throughout it are top notch, but those buttons stand out like a sore thumb.
Keep up the great work,
Don

There's enough going on in the game that you want the buttons to be clear and legible. The game is complex and arcane enough without having to figure out the difference between an Enslave and a Recruit icon or an Explore and a Harvest icon.

Oldalchemist don't be so old fashioned. Who cares if I don't know what I'm pressing the important part is that the button sparkles when I press it. "sir why are we surrendering? Our ship is 10 times more powerful." "yeah but have you seen the surrender button? Its so shiny and pretty."

Hmmmmm... Good point. Ok new scenario for my Cadar captain. "uhhhhh... Captain, What happened to the ship?" "It's ben renovated to look sleeker and newer. Any unnecessary buttons or controls have been done away with." "yeah but apart from piloting controls the torpedo button is the only one left... where's the comm system to hail other ships?" "that system was too clunky so we created another system. If we have any messages for the other ship we just write a note and tape it to a torpedo."

You know what would be sweet? Some ships can get upgrades and some can't. Make some ships walled garden style no-upgrade ships. They're pretty good but expensive and hard to repair. Maybe these are Rank Ships. Make some ships skeletons, but with lots of room for upgrades. They're crappy, but cheap initially, and pretty easy to repair. Maybe these are Star Dock ships.

I could make ships that have blacked out upgrade spots at will. I suspect people will be like 'this is tyranny!'

It would kinda make sense that a shuttle has less upgrade slots than a battlecruiser... i think people than were new to the game if that change were made wouldnt be so irrate.

Wow. All thread hijacking aside, I think updating the buttons is an easy to implement change that would dramatically improve the appearance of the UI. I'm not suggesting replacing the buttons with picture icons as I definitely agree that it would be icon overload. Text buttons are definitely the way to go. However if you have done any Android app development you will recognize those grey text buttons right off as being the stock SDK generated buttons. Coloured buttons with rounded edges are a simple way to update the UI to be a little more modern while maintaining the same game play. Take a look at Dark Nova or just about any other game in the Android Market as an example.

When I originally snagged those buttons out of the pre-release gingerbread SDK, they were cutting edge. Now, they're the same as the OS.
I am going to make new ones themed around the new HUD metal box. I appreciate everyone's encouragement and suggestions =)
