Aside from 'because you can' -- why would you want to?

I think it is supposed to be for if you lose your ship or get taken prisoner. I have yet to ever bury treasure in Aop or ST.
Actually according to my stats it says I have had zero expeditions. Have landed on loads of beaches which is in the stats. Bug or not implemented yet?

I use the island chests to store shot and powder and ships rations. You can stock up an island and stay in the deep sea pirating or just always have the stuff you need in an area you hang out in (I love trading timber in copper mountains). If there is a treasure fleet in the area of your cache you will not be able to access your chest until they leave. They have never taken my stuff even on beaches with a low bury treasure rating (I think it was 4) but I can't guarantee it won't happen.

I use these features constantly in both games. Anytime I see a surplus, I buy everything and store it on the nearest cache. Later, I resell it.
In AoP, there was an intention to complete a slow reduction of cached goods, but at this time, you are VERY good at hiding large quantities of things on islands. It's the Captain's special skill.
Unlike ST, where your caches can be robbed, AoP never steals your stuff -- but i will keep you out of the goods for potentially long periods of time.

Looks like I have to learn how to bury treasure, then. It didn't occur to me that you could bury anything except gold. Silly, silly me, who with ST experience _ought_ to have been wiser. Is how to do this documented any place?

Documented? Oh, grävling, I have to dash your hopes once again but I am going to guess that there is no documentation.

You don't HAVE to dash her hopes, you could just delegate that documentation to someone else in TB. I have no idea who you could delegate that responsibility to...

Well, some player who knows how to do this could post instructions here, in a form suitable for inclusion in the manual -- or not, if your native language isn't english we could start with what you wrote, and copyedit it until it is suitable -- and then TB could stick it in.

We'd be happy to do so.

Ok, I have found out how to do this, so I will work on something.
Question: The tiny island s of Kinloch Rannoch and the one s of Pembroke are both named 'Gold Island'. While in real life, the number of 'Gold Islands' is huge ... shouldn't they have different names?
Interesting .... now the island s of Pembroke is Skull Island. But I promise you it wasn't the first time I landed there ... weird bug.

Could it be related to the fact that I didn't have any damage to repair when I landed there the first time? Just thinking out loud ...

Could it be related to the fact that I didn't have any damage to repair when I landed there the first time? Just thinking out loud ... Maybe -- might just be a code bug. The wild zones are only stored into your saved game when you first visit them, otherwise they're only in the map file, and don't exist in your saved game. So it makes sense that if there was a bug in this naming code, it would manifest as the name changing as it was copied into your saved game, and appeared to be different on subsequent visits. This is also how cities work, and how we'll be able to add variable ship ratings and colony bombardment.

Happened again.
Shrine of Rogues in the Horn was Wharf of the Abyss when I visited it the first time. I'd already been to the Warf of the Abyss.
