Don't think there is a thread for this yet, but I know I have a few ideas for starting new captains that I think would really set this game apart.
The latest one just came to me- how interesting would it make the beginning if you were able to choose your starting officer? I'm not talking about having Sveet be your starting officer, that would be absurd. But an officer with the ability to help keep the crew in line like an intimidation bonus, or an officer who knows merchants across the seas and can help with prices and availability of certain goods. An officer who helps with cannon operations, or helps keep the Sails in good shape like a damage reduction bonus. An officer who helps in ship avoidance for a smuggler... Nothing too drastic, just a way to tweak the starting crew a bit to better suit your play style...
I've said it before but I'll put it again for the sake of the thread: inherent abilities dependant on the captain... Knights getting commission bonuses for war commissions or morale bonuses while on commission for home nation, or home town advantage and prices when buying ships, could be based on rank... Merchants getting a quantity boost for buying goods or a small price increase percentage or higher starting gold to start trade routes earlier... Smugglers having a compartment for gold and commissions to be hidden in... Swashbucklers having fencing bonuses... Not sure how you would balance it, just something to think about.
