Well, maybe not quite as slow as NASA launching a rocket.
But the week-long trip into orbit pretty strongly implies it isn't like taking your car down to the super stop-n-shop. So it's either warm-up or the slowest ascent into orbit ever. I'll put my money down on "prep-time" rather than "We spend a week in the atmosphere slowly gaining altitude until we're in orbit."
Being an ex-sailor I'll attest that a week is a bloody long time to prep a ship though.
Frankly, I try not to think about it too much. Thinking about things like this tend to lead me to trying to come up with an explanation for space-bucks. (and Cory's warned to not even think too hard about that topic)
(chalk it up as one of the few instances of failure to suspend disbelief in the game, and given how rare those are we should probably not nit-pick it and just be greatful there aren't more of them)
Just my $.02 though....

I am not really worried about a lack of suspending disbelief. I have been a fan of all forms of fantasy to long to worry about that.
I think I am more perturbed at times with game improvement suggestions, wishes and the like are debunked with outrageous stories invented by players than by a practical reason by the developers, even if its as simple as cory deciding he just doesn't like it.
Not every idea is worth persuing.
An urban to wilderness buttin and vice versa should make the date change the same amount as going to orbit, after all u have to make sure the ship is safe to launch as well as load and secure any cargo and unload it at space port. I am merely looking for a decrease in button pressing.
*edit: i plead temporary insanity. I would like to apologize. Interplayer discussion is one of the core. Reasons of being here. I need to learn to better express and expound on my thoughts and ideas.

Personally I don't really care one way or the other about a button to go urban from wild without hitting orbit. I could see advantages, can't really see a downside either. I suspect I'd rather development time went to CK, even though I'm ready more of an ST player I know the folks doing CK really seem to enjoy it, and the early beta I poked around in was pretty awesome
Mostly what I was doing was trying to come up with an explanation for how it could take a week to go to orbit, because it does. The comment about space bucks was mostly just a jest about how Cory has in the past ward warned us not to think too much about some things because there's no good explanation for them.
I suspect time to orbit may need to be one of them as well.

Just my small input to this, but I tend to think that if you don't go to orbit first, you have no risk of ship encounters while trying to land in the wild zone after leaving the urban zone on the same planet (or urban zone if you are leaving the wild zone of same planet). My guess is the way the game works (i.e is programmed), you can always take-off from a landing without much of an issue, but may have trouble landing (even at same location) due to random ship encounters that can't simply be acknowledged. - Successfully Ignoring an encounter or fleeing an encounter or even winning an encounter while trying to land always returns you to orbit. - Also as far as time goes yeah I don't think it should be over thought like abs said. A week to get to orbit raises concerns but what about your captain still captaining a space craft at the age of 200 years ?? shouldn't that raise more concerns ? - It would for me if I could last that long - but still trying

Like said, was never an issue thr length of time. Longer life can be explained away with advances in healthcare, evolution of the species, the effects of living in zero g.

I think that a button from Urban to wild and vice versa would be IMMENSELY awesome.
Also, I don't know if it should take up time either... It doesn't take time to go from the market to the space dock afterall.
Mind you, what you DO there takes time, but you'll notice that since exploring, buying, and selling takes like two to three months anyhow... I'd rather just be able to blip over without any time loss... A sub-orbital hop, even a full up in orbit hop, should take less than a week. Even a week is maybe okay, but I'd rather see it just happen.
But the 3+ weeks from exploring to urban (encounters) can really rack up time fast....
