ok... I have played this for a bit, I will grant you not much yet, but I have yet to figure out how combat movement really helps you besides getting to a point you can hit them. Am I missing something? Strategically it doesn't seem like range, LOS or anything else is effecting combat.

Sure. For one thing you can run far enough for the escape command to work. Line of sight does have effect, but you've got to be far enough around a corner for it to work. I'm not positive about range but it does seem like being farther range-wise impacts shot accuracy to me. Strategically I try a few things with some success. To name a few tricking the ai into seperating out of a group can help, if possible I hit an alley to set up choke points, especially if I am using a firearm that has greater range than my foes, it forces them to approach me in a straight line and fewer enemies can shoot at me in one round. Simply hiding behind something for a moment to use stims or medpacks without being shot is nice, and so on. Also as your stats and ap increase so does your movement range. Greater freedom of movement gives even more options, particularly if you are in melee combat. Don't forget I think we are also going to see multiple character parties eventually and that makes movement and strategy even more important. I'm guessing we will also see splash damage weapons sooner or later and that again makes where you're standing something to think about. The list goes on.

Range is a key factor in determining "to hit roll."
Also, I realize that only about half the stats on items are showing -- once you can see all the values for guns and hand to hand weapons it will help differentiate them.
PS: Yes multiple character parties should arrive soon =)

Cannot wait to see multi-character parties! I think as the game grows, you will see lots of reasons that movement range, corners, line of sight really start to make a bigger difference. Different characters (and enemies) with different abilities (melee, longer range, grenades) will bring these things right into the fore.
