Okay, here we go.
1. Fetch missions.
I know, I know, some people don't like bringing 50 units of crystals from A to B, but that's what the reject offer button is for. Trying to play the game as an explorer/merchant/smuggler is hard and you almost always have to resort to bounty hunting missions to get by.
2. SOB! (Save Our Bacon!)
Missions which require you to pick up/rescue a faction's heroic (or maybe unlucky) captain stranded in an escape pod somewhere. You can either require a free slot in your crew section, which would raise your Rep with that faction for being so hospitable to the poor guy, or keep him in his escape pod in a free space of your cargo- giving default reward. You could make warring factions hire out contracts to have you pick up their enemy's captain as well. Perhaps make a slider to hire/dismiss crew members!
3. Armageddon! Oh crap!
Set up a moderately small set of meteors in deep space for harvesting (mostly metals/water/chemicals? Maybe even make a new item type: rare metals! Only found on meteors, of course). Exploring would be pointless for obvious reasons, but there could be contract-generated meteors that are headed for split urban/wild areas (or just wilds because they're a faction's nature preserve or some hippy stuff like that) that your ship would either need to land/destroy at risk to your crew/ship due to obvious reasons, or maybe treat it in the battle menus. (Ie torpedo, advance and gun...)
