I totally get the crazy, been having the same issues with aliens- lots of 'false starts' are part of the game on higher levels. I've had problems escaping, and balancing skills gain, and all the rest- Lurker's guidance is good.
I think that to best aliens regularly, you have to really work at it- you need an unbalanced build geared towards a certain mechanism. If you're a torp and maneuver captain, or an avoidance captain, or a board and kill them all captain, build HEAVILY that particular way. I've had a couple of tremendously successful captains, who've won really close battles as the sole survivor having boarded a ship, and only because he dueled the alien captain to death. I have literally said "oh crap, I'm totally dead here", and lived only because my 230 crew died while I managed to kill the enemy captain through dueling.

Thats what grinds my gears about this. You can be friendly with all factions but aliens are kill or be killed. And no matter how good your pilot/stealth is their levels are always too high to make a difference
Essentially this means the only style of play that is sustainable in the long term is boarding/warrior captains. And thats whats unfair. Why even bother offering all the different playstyles when only one is any true chance of success

spacecowboy I get your frustration. I think almost all Star Traders players have gone through this point where they really hate aliens. I certainly did. In the end though aliens end up being the only real challenge in the game. Even on impossible it's possible to get close to God status where it's nearly impossible for somebody besides and alien to bring you down. I guess one thing is how you think about success in Star Traders. It's actually a game that's designed to make sure that every captain eventually dies, because well, that's real life and without that edge the game would become pretty dull. A few player have gotten captains into the hundreds (7 hundreds on impossible even) but I can't imagine how that could be fun any more. I always want to go start a new captain to do something else. Old captains should be retired and left in peace for more exciting new ones. With all that said, there are actually two strategies that work against aliens. I've made stealth/sail captains that have been able to run away from aliens, even high-level aliens, quite easily (one that I can think of specifically, did die to an alien at level 70). Also if you don't wan't a combat oriented captain then you have to be very conscientious about the rules for avoiding aliens. Check rumors, stay far away from alien ones.

The trouble with pumping stealth is that it boosts your level on an almost 1:1 ratio, which makes torp captains harder than they need to be. I know, I've tried. ;_;

One more thought, spacecowboy , CAB, can you post your Difficulty, Level and Game turn for your captains who died because of Aliens?

No, I cannot. When a captain dies I give him a proper empty space burial, as it were. So all I have on my phone is the one active captain I am playing right now. I can tell you that I have been playing Crazy to get some awards I am missing.
I won't really mind getting killed by aliens AFTER I finish getting all the awards. Until then they are frustrating as heck. Or were until someone on here let the cat out of the bag on how to cheat and survive them. I don't like to cheat on games but I'm making an exception in this case because I don't have hours and hours and hours to keep replaying the same captain and HOPE I can narrowly survive the aliens over and over while I'm trying to get 1117 victories on Crazy or whatever.

It should work on higher difficulties
