FOREMAW, I know your problem. you need to "Scroll" down your buttons on the hack screen. there are actually a few more buttons BELOW the ones you can see. This is a common problem, and one that had me scratching my head for days. I only found it by accident. however since finding out how to hack, it has become the ONLY way i get money.
and while on the subject;
DATDADDY, I have had the same thing happen, at least with captain malloy, as he is the only contact i have.
seems the cat is out of the bag on a little exploit/glitch i found out.
when selling paydata, you get a negative hit to your rep for whatever faction's paydata you are selling. this only occurs WHEN you sell it. I have found that if you get the rep to its negative maximum, or at least close to it, and then sell a big load of paydata, its like the negative counter "Rolls over" and goes back to zero, and can even take you into the positive quite some way.
last time i did this, was yesterday.
I had the following stats.
Reputation:
Brave Star: -148 Wanted Terrorist
Then I pulled out my abacus (yes i have one, and its awesome help for keeping track of how much space you have left on your computer without exiting the hacking screen. each paydata file is exactly 5MB, so if your comp holds 800MB, then you have space for 160 paydata. That way, each time I get a paydata, i move a bead on the abacus. (by the way, you will NEVER get more than 2 files of paydata before you need to log out and back in. sometimes you only get one file. look for the "Null data/drive disconnected, etc.' messages and if you see one, then hit back and then go back in, because there is no more data in the node.
so, i took my full load of 160 paydata files to sell to captain malloy, netting me an awesome, cyber augmentation shopping spree-ing ammount of
40,000¥!then I wondered how bad my reputation with them was now!
so i checked....

I still have not found the "reset" point. I am assuming that since you can get above 100 rep (or below it) that it is most likely -255. so if you can get a rep to negative 240 or above, then stop there. then start amassing as much paydata as you can hold, and then sell it all. for each paydata sold, the game will assign a negative rep gain.
-240
-242
-244...
...
...-254 (and then the game is still trying to assign negatives, since all of this is occuring in the SAME transaction) so the next number would logically be -256, but since the game does not register a value that high, it "Rolls over" or "Resets" to zero. However, since this is all happening on the same action (selling the paydata all in one lump instead of doing it one at a time) it is still doing the negative. so what is the negative of a negative?
yep.
a positive.
so it goes...
-252
-254
+1
+3
+5
+7
+9
+11
please keep in mind, I DO NOT know how the programming works here, but from the many games i have dissected over my years of gaming (starting with atari 2600!) I can honestly say that this is what makes sense to me. It could be that the number only goes to -200, heck, it might stop at -150 for all i know, as i dont have any reps higher than that right now.
but what i do know is that you can go from a really high negative, to a really low positive, and this explanation fits perfectly with the way games handle data values, and variables, like the players REP score.
I hope this helps to explain it to you, and hope it helps cory fix the glitch (though i dont mind having a way to make enemies into friends while ripping them off!)
of course i could be wrong. but i am confident enough in this, that i would bet money on it in vegas. maybe not more than 50 bucks, but i would still bet on it.
Cory, feel free to correct me if i am wrong, but i think this is the culprit (or damn close to it) for the reputation switch error that some people report.
and for EVERYONE else;
keep in mind that if this trick works on negative rep, the reverse is most likely true as well. so be careful if you have a really high rep, or you may find that its a huge negative next time you do a string of missions (or something that would cause multiple rep points in the same action).
I think i will go ahead and put the finishing touches on my hacking section from the Knight's Bible, and release it right away. It seems that this hacking issue is a problem for lots of people. the rest of the info will wait for the full release, but hacking needs to be "Tutorialized".
I may also create a video tutorial on youtube if anyone here thinks it will help. That way, even those of us who do not speak english as their main language would be able to learn, since the video would show the screen as i went through a hack.
geez. this post is getting long......
alright, alright.
Im stopping....
man i gotta work on that...
