It does, but I thought Phase 2 planets started with factories for two? Your Colony Hives do, but the Colonization ships that you build afterward are not as advanced. The tech coming out of Planetary Construction 4, down the Space Colonization tree will allow you to advance up to the point where you can build new Hives that come out of the gate with better build-outs.

ugh, just got a ways into my 3rd game. I'm just not getting the fun of the economics yet. This game the Xenos gave me lots of room and I was able to establish 11 colonies before making contact with them, my biggest empire yet. In the end, this game is going south again though. I really hate that I just have to keep running back an building habs all the time. I've got a quality 7 planet that jumped up to 6 population pretty quickly. What is the point of something like that? I build a bunch of habs and a spice hall to try and get them happy again and then pray that the population doesn't jump and tank the morale and therefore my economy.
It seems like I hit the same cycle every time. Build ships because I can't defend the empire with two Templar Defenders. They start getting damaged and taking up lots of maintenance. All the while certain planets are there just for me to build habs and eventually I can't keep up and their morale tanks further draining my economy and then the World Killers start showing up and I can't kill them very quickly so they destroy some population (which ironically makes my colonies happier!) and also planet quality. In the meantime, I start losing ships because mine aren't killing the offensive ships, they're just killing the World Killers.
I guess I'm doing something wrong. I would have thought I'd be past Normal difficulty by now.
This is a little bit of a rant and I should stop. So one question, I really don't like that every turn I basically have to be looking through my colony list to see where I have to go build habs because population is at or near 100%. I find, not being able to take an eye off of established colonies and suddenly needing to stop everything to go build a bunch more houses tedious. Are other players seeing this as a problem that impinges on the "fun" element or am I out in left field on my own here?

I admit that it can be a chore keeping up with the houses but this is how I've been doing it. I colonize 6 maybe 7 planets. And I just sit on them. The Xenos won't attack right away so I leave them alone. I get my money and happiness up to the point where I can get ships. And I put in an extended order. I place an order for a ship on every planet, then 2 hab units, one ship, two units. Rinse repeat. I'll place the order evenly till I get to about 2000 on money. I never attack Xenos first. Maybe try this? Until I have money and housing I don't even bother with ships. I play on normal most of the time as well.

contributor - sounds like an advisor would help. 1) What is your system upgrade layout? 2) Are you getting to Hab Unit II and then using it? 3) Are you making sure that you are match population to Factories? 4) Are you putting in some base Mines on every planet? 5) The aliens are just brewing up to attack me (the rumors started ... that's always a bad sign) and I am netting +$500 / turn and piling up a Treasury. A strong planet can build a Hab I in a turn if I have a population growth. At this point, I want more, because I have Factory 2 and need the population to keep my empire growing. Sorry, we are working on making the economy clearer. Really appreciate the feedback, we are listening and tuning. Maybe here are two formulas I use: Start a HIVE Colony 1) Build a Mine 2) Build a Hab Unit 3) If population has grown, build a factory. If not, build a Mine and wait for population to grow. When it grows, add a Hab / Factory to match. Start a normal Colony 1) Build a Hab 2) If population is already growing, build another Hab 3) Build a Factory as soon as you can 4) Don't really sweat Morale at this point 5) When your Factory / Habs have straightened out, add Mines for the base. Upgrade everything to 2 as fast as you can. Do not overpile things you don't need. Playing on Hard.
