Just for S***s and giggles, I figured, lets send the combat ships out early.. as in.. IMMEDIATELY. Get the colonization going, as usual, explore the few anomalies nearby and have all 3 scout/combat ships head immediately to the xeno worlds.
So this is within the first 10-15 turns easily. my three ships show up, find 3 xeno ships and two of the planets. So I start killing things, to see just how smoothly things go.. two turns after I start, a new ship comes from one of the planets. (I can't click the planet to see what stats it has, just it's a xeno colony). A turn later, a new ship from the other planet. A turn later a ship from the first planet... And two more fly in out of the fog of war
Now, by this time I've killed about 6 xeno ships and mine have taken a beating. (The pig-pile style attacking works well) But there's simply no way in hell that the production of these planets within the first double-handful of turns is pumping out THAT much (on normal even) without a ridiculous boost to the xenos

You shouldn't antagonize the Xeno early in the game.
Do you go Alien hunting at Level 2 in Star Traders?
The AI has the same amount of money as you do, and they will go aggressive on you quickly.
The AI uses an "early life experience" model to determine behavior.
If you go kick them while they're young, they'll never forget it and will develop into nasty, hate-filled little aliens.

So, if you send them things, will they think you are their momma?

So, if you send them things, will they think you are their momma? perfect solution to early overpopulation. Here, have a tasty colony ship. Crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside!

A turn later a ship from the first planet... And two more fly in out of the fog of war Sounds like their defense against zerg-rush strategy is working great!

Yeah, but that's got to be 50+ cf a turn, unless their ships are dirt-cheap. Strong can be one thing, but sounds like that bit where as soon as they colonize they have a full 20/20 at full strength, which doesn't make for a good game, just broken

The computer uses very cheap ships early in the game. Sorry you think it is broken, I will keep trying to improve it. Hopefully you will find a few little things about the game that you like, in spite of the Xeno AI.

Can't wait to start leveling some xeno hives with orbital fire missions.

Cory Trese : Oh, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it. And yes, the starting ships the factions have are stronger on the whole, (3 solid hits will kill just about any early xeno ship), that they can pump them out like that is a bit nuts.

Not in ST4x, or the ancient Alpha Centauri, Colonization, and Civilization series. We as human grow attached to the colonies and the people, the computer AI will go all out even if it means $0 at the bank account and population in riot mode. I have seen many times years ago in Civilization these 1 city nation go all out attacking with units that probably came from thin air. I myself went slowly and build things up while these suicide morons come charging at me.

Wait are you serious? So how I act on the first few turns will determine how xenos act for the rest of the game? Also, I've noticed that xenos can be pretty non aggressive, backing away unless they're provoked and leaving mid fight. I've also noticed that although they have a big numbers advantage, their ships are much weaker than yours.

@starfixer:I'd assume the two things you mentioned are connected; I'd assume that if you had "kicked them while they're young" they would have not backed away then. And, have you seen the second wave? The one that seems to never end?

Oh come on now, they were nasty, hate-filled little aliens from the start, he just kicked a hornets nest a little early and sped up the process. ; )
