Haven't seen this mentioned as of yet; so here goes.
With the importance of the amount of metal and crystal available on a planet being made clear with respect to repairs, is it possible to include some indication of what the stock levels were the last time the captain was on a planet? I could see color coding, or a simple text indicator of High {H} Medium {M} and Zero {Z} working to communicate the stock levels of the trade good on that planet.
I realize that remembering where lots of metal is regularly around *cough* blasted Cadar armor *cough* is part of the role of the captain, but we already have a history of prices being generated and remembered for us. Having a rough indication of quantity seems like it would fit the same flavor and balance of the remembered prices.
It also seems that this could help plan a route to a shortage rumor to maximize the hold space you have while still moving in the right direction. Conversely, I could see this as unbalancing for the same reason. The captain no longer has to recall which planets should be stopped at on the way to their latest spice fueled rumor.
I have no idea what the code side of things looks like but just wanted to make the suggestion.

I am not 100% on this but i am pretty sure the quantities can change drastically with little or no notice.
As far as adding stuff to the map, i am pretty sure that is just way out there, something about the screen going black. Otherwise we might see faction flags *cough*
As far as putting the data u request somewhere else, if the planet u r at now had high levels 5 weeks ago, what would that data be to you now if it is zero? If you want a complete quantity and price trend data over the length of the game presented on a graph.... Thats so useful as to be totally impossible ;-)

Maybe I can clarify what I mean a bit then.
Not looking for a huge UI overhaul, or any kind of addition to the Captain's map. It seems like (from the wiki) Cory already has some work in progress to make the captain's log of prices more useful (i.e. color coding, best prices, or however else it shapes up).
I would like to see some kind of simple quantity indicator on that same captain's price log.
Granted that quantity and price can and do fluctuate both wildly and quickly, caveat emptor.
This desire is coming from the position of an established smuggler needing to patch up some armor or sails after a few rounds of pirate hunting, and wanting to get the best repairs possible for her credits. Not being able to remember if it was Occupied Baza or Steel fortress that had the abundance of crystal the last time I was there seems like something that could be included with the games memory of the price the last time I was there.
I hope that is more clear!
