What do you normally do, spread out to the farthest world possible before meeting xenos or do you colonize every system you see before going to the next? Or do you simply go for the highest resource/quality planets? Anyone?

Form an e ast/ west and north south perimeter fr9m a corner then work my way in. I want my oldest and highest production colonies on the outer edge so I can get new ships built and into the fight asap

I expand slowly as expanding quickly always got me into a fleet race and money problems. I like having my builder colonies in the back, then build that economy and a few ships to keep a world safe before I expand again. When I actually do move beyond my corner, I go for planets that are decent quality and not too far from my builders (well within a turn's reach of my other planets) so I can deliver ships quickly as possible with minimal fuel loss (if I need ships that badly, I'm probably facing world killers and I need crushing force yesterday!!).

But then xenos take over the other three quarters of the quadrant.

I tend to expand in waves.
Do not hesitate to pass up worlds that aren't idea, like Blue or White Star with 2-20 Quality.
They're often not worth the effort in the early game. Seek out Yellow and Red Stars for better colonies.
That lets you expand at a reasonable pace and still take over large numbers of sectors. Go back later and fill in the whites and blues

I will still do a white or blue early if it helps me seal the border

I will still do a white or blue early if it helps me seal the border True. And it keeps the Xeno from sneaking past you and taking worlds in the back field.

So, in order we want red, then yellow, then blue, and in emergencies white?
Time to start a newsidekick game... i thought red meant explode (who was the jerk that came up with red=explosive anyway).

Yellow Stars => High Quality, Mineral Range moderate Red Giants => More Minerals, Quality Range moderate White Stars => Moderate Scores, Low Ranges Blue Stars => Low minimums, high Mineral dice, low Quality dice
That is how I rank them. If you're playing Javat, you might want Reds first.

As a chess player my immediate instinct is to gain control of the center, making troop movement easy for me and hard for my opponent. Although on larger maps the "center" might not restrict your opponent much early, but as you expand you might find a way to strike them at weak points they cannot reinforce easily especially if they are forced to take colonies on opposite sides. I am trying to use scan more on the fringes to keep track of movement better than the xenos to stay a step ahead of their attacks and send an appropriate force to defend. A strategy like this cannot work if I am spread too thin.
