Well, time to curse myself again! The latest incarnation of Black Spike has managed to do quite well - I stole a Pirate Skylift early on, when it randomly attacked me for no reason (Artefacts? What artefacts? Nothing to see here ...). This did me quite well, until I managed to amass a decent hoard from exploring (top left of map, as recommended). I have since spent about 750k on a shiny new ship The Hunter: Hull 15 Armour 9 Engines 36 Sails 36 (+25%) Crew 60 Hold 115 (+25 Water, +25 Weapons, +25 Records) Guns 16 Torps 6
Used for Exploring and occasional Deliveries, it seems to be OK so far, even if the Exploring seems to be tailing off (lots of Crew deaths!).
I've gained pretty good rep with the Great Houses (50-100), and have Trade permits with the Syndicates (rep: 5-50), and am now buying up any Promotions I can get. The main plan is to get my Syndicate 151+ rep Badge (isn't there a 'positive rep with all 6' badge, too?). So, lots of Contracts for The Syndicates, and attempting to haul Artefacts across Wild Space to sell!

And it is done! It's almost as if the Aliens can smell when I've got no Weapons! I ran into a planet with a Weapons Shortage, so sold off the 25 I usually keep in my Lockers, thinking to replace them ASAP. But before i get to the next planet, 3 (THREE!) Alien ships jump me! The first I repelled, the second crippled me, and the third seemed to take pleasure in slowly digesting my crew while forcing me to watch!
DAMMIT!
I did get Big Tent badge, though, and took a risk that paid off to get Intrepid Explorer!
