You must build Military Transports (MT), or any ship with Planetary Invasion (PI) and Drop Pods / Drop Ships.
The move the MT near the world and activate the PI Training. Then tap the Xeno World and you'll see your Invasion options.
The game automatically generates a "Military Transport" ship design for you when you research "Planetary Invasion 1" technology. That ship comes pre-made and ready to invade.

What's the difference between bombard and invade, and what does scout do?

Bombard hurts Quality a lot.
Scout is like "light invasion"
Invade is for full on landings.

So which has the highest chance of hurting population over quality? Inavsion? And why do scout when you can do invasion which does more pop damage?

It took me a long while to figure out how to start invasion. I knew it was possible from reading the forms but had no idea how until I found the planetary invasion tech.
Now I am invading a colony. Or trying to.
How long does this take? Keep atracking until they are all dead?
I have had two ships parked in orbit around an alien colony both doing full invade for 10 turns, surrounded by a cloud of protective ships fending off the hordes of alien missile cruisers.
When do I win?

Or when quality reaches 0. But if that happens the planet becomes dead and no one, you or xeno, can colonize it.

That's a long grind, defintely doable but it takes a lot of fighting for a single battalion to destroy an entire world. Like Star Traders RPG, jamming the same button over and over does not work as well as alternating a rhythm. Try using 2-3 Military Transports and using Bombard -> Scout -> Invade -> Bombard -> Invade -> Scout -> Invade.

Fantastic! This is exactly the sort of detail I was after.
Please put this in the game manual.

Having given it a go, I will add something else:
If you are trying to capture rather than destroy, stick to Scouting only (otherwise quality gets shredded pretty quickly), and you need at least 3 troop transport ships attacking every turn.
Surrounding the planet with a ship in every square prevents them building reinforcement ships from the target planet.
The alien population will increase by 1 EVERY turn up to the Max of 20, so one transport alone will never work for capture - you normally tend to kill one population per turn per ship, but it is sometimes zero or two.

I tried invading but the quality gets destroyed before I can reduce the pop to 0. I'll try scouting. The problem with scouting is that it deals less dmg overall though.
One thing I want to add is that once you invade a planet of theirs, they'll try to invade yours, sending more world killers than ever before. So don't expect to invade a planet and walk away without any consequence.
