1. Disagree: Xeno start in random locations
2. Agree: exploration and territory control are good strategies in this game.
3. Agree: however, make sure you don't make all your fighters by the same Faction, or morale will suffer badly
4. Agree: balancing your research priorities is a good move
5. Agree: expand past uninteresting worlds until later in the game when you have the capital to upgrade them. Mines make money fast, build them.
6: yes
Great post, really nice. TP are critical. Don't overlook Assault Fighters -- they reduce enemy defenses to make your Cruisers and Strike Fighters MUCH more effective.

Hi Cory, thank you for the reply!
1. Err, maybe because they start on opposite sides means at least i know from which general direction they are coming from? haha.
3. Well, I'm guilty of this, most of my ships get made by Cadar/Thulun forces (I wanted steel song but so far I do not see the aforementioned +5exp when i make ships from that faction) Also, methinks if most of my border worlds are of the same faction, then ships of that same faction will not suffer too much morale loss from internal conflicts. (Thus most of my border worlds are Thulun haha).
I'll have to try assault fighters haha. I have a bias to fighters coz of movement rate of 4. hehe

@jehuty the starting positions are randomised. On larger maps, they are in general "somewhere in THAT direction" but don't count on it completely.
Sometimes they start out only a few planets away. Then things get lively quite quickly.

First impressions
I think overall ST4X seems so similar to every other 4x game we've all ever played that I've assumed too much about it. The components of the game that have given me the most trouble are all of the classic Star Traders mechanics like faction bonuses, politics, faction space, spice, and how technology unlocks the different things I want to do with my ships (boarding, invading, etc.)
These mechanics are also what I like about the game as it makes feel fresh and novel but also ties the game to the ST universe in a way that keeps me trying to get better despite some of the mechanics being a bit of a black box.
After my first couple tries, I stopped trying to play Civ and decided that I'd better start learning how to play ST4X. That went a lot better. Who knew having all Cadar colonies would lead to so much in-fighting?
Another turning point for me was changing my battle perspective from strategic (most of my 4x style) to tactical. This helped hugely as I thought through my ship designs. Instead of just spamming the best strike fighters I could I started thinking about my squadrons like a party in Heroes of Steel. What roles do I need filled to not only defend but also wipe the Xeno from the face of the quadrant. What type of ship will by my cleric, mage, etc.? No amount of money is too much to spend on my Vraes-class cruiser to stand toe to toe with the Xeno. Which ship do I give kills to as I develop my crit hit specialist? Boarding sounds like it works like cursing. +4 Theta damage? Sounds familiar...
These two games are not only brothers in a cross-platform coding perspective, you can really tell that they are designed by the same guys despite being very far apart thematically. Once I started thinking like this, things really opened up for me.
I do look forward to the UI getting cleaned up and clarified. Despite my trolling through the forums and the Let's Play video, there are still numbers that I have no idea what they represent.
Overall, I think everyone is hitting the nail on the head as they talk about putting out more information on the game mechanics and making the first introduction for new players more smooth. I had a little bit of a rocky start but there is a fantastic strategic and tactical game here that will satisfy any core gamer. Thanks again guys.
