I started playing ST (freeversion) about a year ago. I thought 'wow! This game is really cool!'. I kept playing until I eventually found an NPC called a Tennath Space Hive. I disabled it, and looted what I could from the 200 capacity it's hold had. A few days ago, after realizing the efficiency of hunting aliens with a Veteran Officer, I ran into another Space Hive. I cannot figure out how to kill/disable them, as they run away instantly. Is there some special way to do it or something?
I have no idea if this ahs been asked before, so if it has, I'm sorry for clogging the forums.

They're very fast, and often high level. The ones in ST 4X are level 400, which follows the pattern. I've seen them in ST RPG as high as Level 1000.
You need to hit them with a Torp, and then Advance. Lots of Stealth, Tactics and then Pilot. Hunting and taking drifting Hives is one of the hardest things to do in the game, especially the Free version.

Cory Trese What would be the in-universe reason for drifting Hives being so hard to catch? Just the fact that they are of ancient design and surpass modern designs?

Correct, and they're often using Gravity Drives, not Void Engines. It's like trying to catch a stone skipping across the galaxy while you're treading water

So being hit by a torp would interrupt the Gravity Drive? And what is the difference in how Void Engines and Gravity Drives work? I know Void Engines use T2O as fuel for nuclear fusion to propel the ship. Do gravity drives work like the theoretical ones, where they contract spacetime in front of them and expand it behind them?

Okay... Why is it then that when you hire a Templar, he may depart after a fight with an alien? He costs half a mil to get in the first place... And btw, thank you for the advice. I just managed to disable a Vast Space Hive!

Wow ... the Vast Hive is particularly difficult. What did you find?

It's like trying to catch a stone skipping across the galaxy while you're treading water I take it void technology allows FTL travel through some sort of foldspace or dimensional jump to avoid travel through spacetime. A gravitic drive in theory could be used to warp space (anyone using an inertial damper has something like it). It creates an artificial slope in the fabric of space that makes the ship fall in its direction, so the light speed barrier technically doesn't apply while in use.

Wow ... the Vast Hive is particularly difficult. What did you find? 124 artifacts, thats all I could take. Thank you for asking. One problem I'm seeing now is that this doenst always work. When I fire a torp, it says I was unable to lock onto to target, or something like that.

Torps do not always hit, no. Increase your Stealth score to improve the rolls.

Then you have a chance. Once your level is anything of note theirs will be something ridiculous and well ... follow Cory's advice is your best bet but I think even then your odds are loooooow.

I now see what you mean. Where the hives early on were levels 20-200, they are now 100-400. I was able to kill two though before this problem arose.
