Was thinking of another thread about surrendering to a merchant and the thought struck me, when u encounter one there should be the option to do business with each other. For goods of all kinds, perhaps even repairs and upgrades.
I often encounter repair shuttles and wish i could hire them.
Prices could be exorbitant(sp?) But rightfully so if u r getting desperatly needed W-F from a rychart merchant while flying for thulun during a rychart-thulun embargo.
It could open up some "fun"... Mebbe

I kind of like this Idea. I guess I tend to think space encounters could be a bit more varied, as they are kind of either hostile (fight, try to run, or surrender) or more peaceful, (Acknowledge or Ignore), Ignore always being peaceful with smugglers and merchants initially - and more a try to run in the case of other class types. Anyway I think it could be fun to have some sort of trade or distress button to push for encounters with friendly factions ships, (military ships for instance) & friendly & (maybe) even hostile faction, merchants & smugglers that might help aid you with water-fuel or Lux Rations - for a considerable "reward" of course, or may also just be trying to avoid embargoes by trading with you. Having said that it suddenly dawned on me that I don't think I have ever encountered a ship that isn't at 100% in most of it's stats, before I started firing at it (except maybe torpedoes & cargo hold). Clearly if that could happen (i.e. we could encounter already damaged ships), the flip side is sometimes friendly ships would ask us for assistance for a Cash and maybe also rep reward, while hostile merchant/smuggler ships might just do it for extra cash and what happens in space stays in space so rep isn't effected one way or the other - naturally if you are a pirate everyone hates you and doesn't trust you, and only friendlies or neutrals would bother asking a military captain or zealot. Anyway I digress, I tend to think upgrades shouldn't really be done in space but then repairs, why not ? like I just said other ships never seem to be in need of repairs when we encounter them

Perhaps u could purchase an upgrade to be installed elsewhere?
Meh, i tend to think i dream up ideas that ae simply beyond the capability of ST.
All encounters are pretty much the same and inspire the same thoughts repeatedly Can i survive? Can i survive undamaged? Can i defeat them? Can i simply damage them enough to allow escape? Can i simply ignore/aknowledge them?
Rinse and repeat.

There've definitely been a number of threads on space trading and the like. It's on Cory's to-do list but probably well down the pecking order. Who knows, we might get it in time for Christmas

The game certainly inspires alot of ideas. I am quite positive Cory must be overwhelmed with possibilities.
