saltin - are you playing the tutorial, because the AI there was significantly down-graded. Maybe that's the problem. The tutorial map is one of only two maps free players can choose from. Maybe make it easier, but not TOO easy. AI difficulty should be based more on game difficulty than map, even though both should be a factor.

try winning on impossible with the bigger map. *snip snip* Seconded, except I'd rename the last category "omgwtfbbq!?". You forgot 'hax!' You can't have 'omgwtfbbq?!?!?' without hax! Lol :-) On topic, maybe the OP keeps getting the more defensive turtle AI. I'm 3.5-4 years into a game on Normal against Terrox Xeno and I didn't have my first combat with them till a quarter way into year 3. And that was only because I instigated it. They had quite a large force built up with a nice variety of ships but never came anywhere near me with them.

I just experienced this as well, a100x50 map with 35 worlds, and the AI never expanded outside its corner of the map. I'm 3.5 years in with 16 worlds colonized, and the AI still havent attacked. If i just can manage to salvage my rocky economy this game will be an easy win. On hard difficulty.

Yes, some maps and AI combinations are easier than others.
Some are harder. Lots of replay options here.

Wow, that should certainly give some replayabilty. And now that i lucked out with easy AI i might finally be able to wrap up a win on hard

Wow, that should certainly give some replayabilty. And now that i lucked out with easy AI i might finally be able to wrap up a win on hard Each map will have a set of AI that are always found on it. For example, Map X will have AI #1, #2 and #3. If you play with Map X with a single enemy, you'll always get AI #1. This lets the maps add replay, the AI be variable in starting location and stance. If you find a game configuration you really like (say, Map X with AI #1 and #2) you can easily replay it over and over without randomization.

Ok, first i thought the AI was randomly selected.
The AI on 100x50 35 system seem way too easy imo. Hard difficulty, first AI attack in year 4 (edit: year 5 maybe even!) and then they still attack with standard level 1 ships. At this point i have colonized 20ish systems while the AI has like 5, and i am defending with refuelling carriers and fighters with 2ap, upgraded weapons & armor. They can barely scratch me. This seems so easy it might actually be a bug? The AI seem to have started somewhere in the upper left corner and hasnt spread out.
Edit again: I should add though that i failed in my previous attempt when the AI was placed in the upper right corner much closer to me and expanded quickly all over that quadrant.

I thought there only 3. It's also cool that every map has specified AIs. If every map has the same AIs, with some (terrox) being much harder than others (tutorial), I think it's important for it to say AI difficulty or hostility on the maps with the size, AI types and resources, or some other type of indication on how difficult the player can exptect the map to be. Otherwize, people may play the tutorial map and think the game is really easy, when in fact that isn't the case.

I have categorized "100x50 35 system" as 'Easy'

I have categorized "100x50 35 system" as 'Easy' I actually thought that the bigger the map, the harder it would be, but I guess that isn't the case if some of the bigger maps have all non-hostile AIs.

If you don't poke the tiger with a stick, it will sleep for a while whilst you assemble your hunting rifle.
This is easier if they are far away and you can build a nice base and prepare your attack in peace.
