i am playing my 2nd time around on crazy, both time as an explorer. its going spectacularly. i've played a totally peaceful game. up to level 22 and not a single fight!
when there is no fighting and lots of trading/exploring going on, my fate hinges on embargoes and alliances. i can see how the negative effects of these conflicts help balance the game. but with enough restrictions, it would be fun to get strategically involved in their constant conflicts.
so what do you think of carving out a negotiator role for the player? the ability to broker peace deals between two factions that are in conflict as well as the ability to bring two factions together for discussions about forming an alliance.
some initial ideas i've had are: - player must have a political officer on board - player must have minimum X level of rep with both factions, as well as minimum Y rank (elder statesmen?) - if the peace talks go south, your rep with both factions plummets (ranks can get stripped?) - spice, booze and cash make everything go better - one of them has to be your starting faction
it should require significant strategic planning and involve intimidating risks, but the rewards of getting that perfect relationship would be huge. when clan javat has a shortage on artifacts and exactly the trade alliance i need, i would give my best ship to be able to make at least one of their two trade embargoes go away. or when there is that one faction that has hated my guts the entire game and the right trade alliance could turn it all around.

Be a hero for both factions. Everyone loves a hero :-)
There.should be a dark side, worsen conflicts either.intentionally or as a result of bad negotiations. There is money to,be made off certain conflicts.

Def. an idea that we're working on. It has been discussed before under the heading of "Diplomat" and I really like the idea of being able to negotiate peace, instigate war, etc.
