I am playing the tutorial for the first time - elite version although I don't think that matters. At some point my research points stopped accumulating and froze at 26 the total number I was at.(new points do get added but remain static each turn - Im now at 28. I get a notice in the turn summary that research has paused and I should pick a new project. But when I go to the research screen everything is greyed out because I only have 28 RP. I don't know if this is a bug or just something I haven't figured out. Thanks. I am loving this by the way, as I have all your games - it may turn out this is my favorite, though it's a tough competition.

The score of 28 RP means you're getting (from your Colony Upgrades) 28 RP per turn.
So if the Research option costs 100 RP, then it will take about four turns to complete.
All Research Technology has a prerequisite, so it is possible you're trying to skip technologies.
Start at the base of the tree and work your way up.

mirk123 - welcome to the forum! Let us know if that explains the issue! Unfortunately, it didn't solve my problem. The problem is that my research points are not accumulating. They just remain at 28 points every turn so that I never have enough points to start a new technology, even though I keep being prompted to by the turn summary screen.

Cory, thanks for the reply but unfortunately it doesn't help. My problem is that my RP's are not accumulating. They just remain at 28 points every turn so I never have enough to start a new technology. It was fine and I was working my way up the tree then all of a sudden (I don't remember exactly what preceded it) it just stopped accumulating points and the entire tree is greyed out. The turn summary prompts me to start a new technology but I can't.

mirk123 - welcome to the forum! Let us know if that explains the issue! Fallen, many thanks for the welcome. I hope I'm using the right protocol to respond. I am very happy to have found the forum. It is difficult to express how much I appreciate the Bros and love their games. I have always known that Cory and Andrew were very responsive to their players, it is really nice to now find other players who feel the same way.

Many thanks for the welcome. Although my first post was in ST 4X I play all the elite versions of the Cory Bros. games. I appreciately the Bros immensely and love each of the games. It's very nice to find the community of players who feel the same way.

I hope I'll be able to help you out. I think you're looking at the technology tree page that shows the tech icons and branches spread out. Most of them will be grey not because you don't have enough RP, but because you have to start researching the basic ones first. RP does not accumulate, you have to choose an available tech to research first, and then you will work your way to research it, 28 RP per turn.
To see your available techs, you should go to the tech screen and then press the light bulb icon on the top right of the screen, which is the second from the left out of the 4 icons next to the back button. When you see one you want to start, you will see the buy button on the bottom when you select it and it lists out the tech details.

mirk123 - if you are getting that turn event each turn, then you have not started a new technology. This means your RP are going to waste each turn, as you aren't actively researching anything. In the first two minutes of this video, I show how to look at techs you have, see what they give you, and at 3:55 on the timeline, I pick a new technology: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wy5zOdBTmYYou need to start the research, or yes, your RP will go to waste!

Aha, figured it out! I wasn't seeing the color distinction between the nodes on the tech tree so I kept clicking on ones that didn't give my a "buy" button and I mistakenly thought I had to have enough RP's accumulated to equal their buy price, e.g. 50 RP in order to start the technology. Inspired by your post below, even without looking at the video (which I also did thank you very much) I re-examined what I was doing and realized that I wasn't clicking on the right tech nodes to select ones that I could in fact buy from a next-step-in-technology standpoint. Thanks so much for your help! Now I've got some technological catching up to do before the Xenos do me in.

Between you and Fallen I was inspired to figure out what I was doing wrong - which was that I couldn't distinguish the different shades of gray on the tech tree, didn't know how to use the light bulb properly, and was therefore clicking on the wrong nodes - and making then faulty assumptions about how it worked. Now to go catch up!

fallen : Maybe changing the colors could prevent players to have the same problem (available ones could be green while unavailable could stay grey for example).

There is only one shade of gray used - it covers unavailable techs. Not sure what we could change?

Now to go catch up! You're welcome! As far as I can see the problem is there aren't any different shades of gray. You must be fooling yourself if you can distinguish them now The only way to tell on the tree is that you can only access the gray ones that are attached to completed ones. I'll also second the suggestion to have a different color for techs available to start researching.
