Started on bottom left of map. Basic initial strategy doesn't change. Same way with Mine, Hab, and Factory for building sequence. Growth economy is a must.
5 years later. I have 32 worlds and own the bottom half of the map. Krangg Xeno on the upper left and Zenga Alien on the upper right. Both has 11 colonies by the time I found them. Krangg happened to be closer so I pick on them first. With full military build, economy still maintained at over 1.5K+ of income per turn with a treasury of over $60,000.
The new Invasion - Fuel consumption change requires a stream of Transport flowing to/from the xeno planet. This Krangg colony had 20 pop and 6 quality. I got 3 turns of invasion before the xeno mob showed up. After few more turns, it was reduced to dead world. Next up will be that Zenga colony to the right side after I move some transports that way. Most likely it will be another dead world creation if I can help it.
Wiping out the aliens could be the ultimate goal but I prefer DMZ at this moment. That way I will have time to build up before fighting again.
More to come....

Date 5.48. War is over for few turns....
I was forced to deal with both aliens at the same time. Couple of Zenga colonies were way too close for comfort, either I destroy them or they will destroy me. No fun at all to fight a 2 front war! Made 1 dead world for Krangg and 3 for Zenga. In return Zenga sent the world killer on 1 of my world. No time to rest as there are at least 1 other Alien world that is way too close for comfort, leaving that alone will mean constant harassment in no time. Guess where my Transports are going next once they are fueled up.
Good things: - Economy never stopped. At worst I was gaining $600 per turn, most of the time was above $1K growth. - Found a 4 star systems that are close enough to each other to create the biggest gas station ever.
Normal with 2 aliens is bad enough for me now. Not too interested in higher difficulty for now.

Year 6.28
Finally created my line of DEAD WORLDs. Most of my systems are at the extreme range from them hence even if they show up, they cannot stay for long. There is however a Quality 8 system that I was forced to occupy after I kicked the aliens off it. I have to keep it because it is too close to my lines to let them have it.
2 Aliens = Double gang up. Once fighting starts, you are getting harassed from 2 enemies all the time. 1 Alien = They can only bother you in 1 place.....
Next game I am going back to 1 alien regardless of map size. Especially now that Fallen has admitted that aliens will NEVER fight among themselves. It means you will get double or triple team when there are multiple aliens. Until that changes, 1 alien is plenty IMO.

Year 7.24
Neutral zone is finally wide enough to enjoy some peace. I have the Klingons (Krangg) on 1 side and Romulans (Zenga) on the other. Lately all the system purge missions resembles what Imperial Japanese Navy felt in 1945. Waves of suicidal missions with cheap ships (no armor) for the sole purpose of neutral zone widening.

Year 9.4
Finally gaining the upper hands and going up the Krangg territories on the left side. Less use for the suicide fighters now I have few of the 100 CP heavy cruisers. Forward bases have been established to refuel the invasion fleet as we go. I am harassing the aliens for a change finally. My prediction is another 3 years before they will all be defeated.
178K in the bank and growth is over 1K even during all these fighting.

did the neutral zone thing work? They didn't come and invade you?

did the neutral zone thing work? They didn't come and invade you? Yes, the AI will only attack colonies a certain distance from their colonized worlds. That range depends on the AI type, the map and difficulty setting.

That range depends on the AI type, the map and difficulty setting. I have colonised 3 planets within the repair radius of alien colonies... I don't think that fight is ever going to end until I clear the vicinity. Sent from my GT-I9300 using proboards

That range depends on the AI type, the map and difficulty setting. Works great while I needed it badly. However there was 1 system in the middle that got its share of harassment to the point I needed few ships there for defense. Now that harassment central is forced to launch a full attack into a new colony that showed up recently. Economy suffers a bit now because I have a huge invasion fleet up there. $170K gives me a lot of buffers. For ships that are too badly damaged, now I can afford to demolish them instead of grabbing duct tapes.

That's the balance you must strike as a military leader =)

I always demolish ships near Carriers or Colonies. It just feels like if I do it when the ship is in Deep Space, I am abandoning the Crew to the vacuum. I could never do that. Even though I am fine with heroic last stands against the Alien while reinforcements can get to the battlegroup's position.

Your Crews are being transported off by Star Trader Captains loyal to your Factions.

That makes sense. I just want them to be close to home I guess. Being the kind martial law enforcing tyrant and Glorious Leader that I am. It also lessens the chance that some asshole Pirate (like me half the time) will accidentally destroy the Ship while to get some free Lux Rats and fuel.

War is cruel. I have many suicide ships with no shield but powerful guns and cost 30 CP to build. They were never meant to survive. Transports were of short supply so many were refueled and sent back out asap.
Rule #1 I learned after dealing with 2 aliens on this 64x64 map: Don't get attached to any ship. Some have to die for the empire.
