An itinerary would be an ordered list of the waypoints that the captain plans to visit. It should be easy to add waypoints to the itinerary from the rumors or contracts lists, or directly from the map. It should be easy to delete waypoints from the list, and to change their order. I currently maintain such a list on sheets of scrap paper, which can get a little clumsy when I'm not sitting at a desk while playing. It would be a minor convenience to be able to keep track of such things within the game itself. In itself, that's probably not a good enough reason to add this feature.
What would really make an itinerary a valuable addition to the game is if it could be displayed on the Status/Cargo/Map screen, and modified on the map itself. There should be a dot for each waypoint on the itinerary, and lines connecting consecutive waypoints. A long-press on a waypoint that is part of the itinerary should pop up a window with all of the current information, plus a button for dropping the waypoint from the itinerary, and two buttons to move the waypoint up and down within the list. The same waypoint could occur multiple times in your itinerary; if so, long-pressing on the waypoint should bring up a menu allowing you to choose which instance of that waypoint you want to work on.
A long-press on one of the lines connecting consecutive waypoints should bring up a screen which displays a graph with the travel time along the x-axis, and water-fuel consumption on the y-axis. The plotted curves should show the minimum amount of water/fuel consumed by any route connecting the first waypoint to the second one in that amount of time. The left edge of the graph would correspond to the quickest route, while the right edge would correspond to the route with the smallest water/fuel consumption. A slider at the bottom could be used by the player to choose how many days to take on that part of the trip. The corresponding route would be displayed on the map.
Multiple lines might pass through the same point on the map; when long-pressing on that location, a menu should come up allowing you to choose which connection you want to edit.
If, with the current itinerary, a contract at one of the waypoints will not be reached in time to fulfill the contract, it should display in red. The lines connecting waypoints should display in green for as long as your current water supply will last, in yellow for the part where you'll be consuming Luxury foods, and red for the rest of the itinerary.
It should be possible to add a proposed contract to your itinerary, before you've decided whether to accept it, and to work on your itinerary before deciding whether or not to accept the contract. If you reject a contract, it should be dropped from your itinerary.
