When I was leaving Red Rock, I did mix up the empowered and basic type attacks. Getting to the first way station is a big challenge if you go all out with SP usage. You should have enough potions to easily get yourself through to the waystation. This works even on Nightmare. I only use basic attacks when the majority of the team's out of SP and I am already in the mob up phase of the running encounter.

I don't know why, but I am always over-sparing with my potion use. I end up with hundreds of potions.

I backtrack miles to avoid potion use. Buying potions also lowers your score I've noticed from the pause screen. In general I'll always use my SP attacks unless I'm mopping up. For example, fireballing three separate targets to 'at least 10HP' means I can unleash Tamilyn's arrows without using piercing shot and still kill them all

Like slayernz and mataeus, my natural tendency is to hoard portions. But maximizing leaderboard scores may require a slightly different approach. The first priority is to avoid buying potions. The second priority is to avoid excessive visiting of campsites, which also lowers your score. So, I'm going to try to use potions a bit more to help me get to try to decrease campsite visits.

Buying potions also lowers your score I've noticed from the pause screen. More specifically, having a large amount of gold increases your score. So if you're worried about it, don't buy anything

Ha ha, yeah, I advise all my competitors "don't buy anything." ahemmmmmpennywiseandpoundfoolishmmmmmmm
Though, I think one can minimize or eliminate potion purchases playing on Hard.

Considering that the focus is on not dying, I buy and use potions a lot on Nightmare. Great way to stay alive

So if you're worried about it, don't buy anything I'm not going to let scoring effect my game play... I'll still buy as many potions as I need, 1) Having Fun.. 2) Getting a nice score
