Research order:
P1 -> S1 -> P2 -> Dive down Faction diplomacy first tree.
Once S1 is studied and my prime worlds have reached pop. 5 I plant first tier colonies. No more than two at a time.
Then down the space colonization to get level 4 colonization.
At some point in the above sequence, I will make first contact with aliens. One this happens , stop PC research for a moment to research fighters 3 , then back to Planetary construction.
Down to level 4 colonization, as I said, then planetary mining. Take one step up to get advanced manufacturing and factory 2, then resume mining.
At some point, back to the st tree to grab carrier technology and refueling capability. Carrier repair and refueling greatly extends fighter lifespan. I've experimented with cruisers, but at this point I just haven't found them to be of enough benefit to justify their cost.
Back to PC to faction diplomacy 2 tree, then fully research it as well as the next PC Tree to get hab 4.
By this time, I should have large colonies with a powerful economy and defense force. Time to think about taking the fight to the enemy.
Research planetary invasion up to 3. Begin building invasion transports while researching the reactor branch. Then push forward to the advanced weapons branch and build the best fighters with the best guns I can.
After this depends on game situation. Once I have hab 4, exchange 4, mine 3 I don't really *need* anything more on that side of the tree, but I still fill it out when I am comfortably ahead of the enemy in technology. Now is also a good time to fill out the capital ship research. Since I earn 100 RP per turn and the cap ship stages cost 50, I can leap down this tree very quickly .
After this all depends on how much threat the enemy is. I try to stay one technology level above the aliens. When new ships start appearing, I push further down the tech tree. Far enough that I am always ahead of them, not so far ahead that I'm neglecting planetary construction.
PC is a priority in the early game so that I have the tools to build a sound economy and solve the population problems. I also need diplomacy so I can quash faction conflicts as quickly as possible. Once PC is adequate, it's time to turn to starships and push hard down that side of the tree in order to translate economic power into military superiority. In the early game, I only need military technology for a short range defense force. In the late game, I need overwhelming military force.
For me, military forces are based on the foundation of a strong economy. So I build the economy first, then the military on top of it.
Hope that helps!
Respectfully,
Brian P.
