Xeno Torpedo?

I noticed that Xeno's can fire torpedoes through planets when I tired to hide a ship behind a planet.  Is this:

1. A bug?
2. A special Xeno weapon?
3. Just a convenience of programming for the AI program and I should not worry about it?

Only ask because when I try it the message is that there is no hyperspace route available.

Intentional Xeno advantage to counteract certain player strategies that are very difficult for the AI to counter without said advantage.

That said, it has been mentioned in a few different e-mails as a point of confusion and is something I do have on the list to fix.
