A lot of people (surprising numbers) read this forum anonymously and never post.
I just wanted to point out that some of the things above like "90 degrees ain't the limit" are a bit confusing, because it all matters how your measure the angles.
The vectoring is intentionally a bit difficult to predict at first. It isn't random, but it intends to drive a different type of factoring than the line of sight, movement required or AoE puzzles.

I don't think distance has anything to do with the angles- I've never noticed a single difference with either LS or Pinning Shot, and I've used them at all distances hundreds of times... The vector depends on the angle of attack used. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course, butI honestly think I've got a good grasp of the dynamics on this.

Distance along the same line has no impact at all. It is all about the vector. Sounds like you do have a pretty good handle on how they work.

I'll see if I can't get a thread started where I explain what I know about directional AoE and their rules, and I'll make up some diagrams to display how they work and examples of their effects.... Tomorrow's project =)
