The challenge with the merchant is starting out - managing relationships with factions (and watching factional conflicts), but by itself it's of limited appeal. Kind of like watching a TV where only the blue light channel is working. Watchable, but you're missing sooo much more. Challenge of getting $10m within 10 years on Crazy ... that's hard. Not impossible - but hard. Getting to $10m within 10 years on Crazy with zero contracts undertaken, zero lootings or ships destroyed after victory ... hmmm, now I'm seeing some challenge

@blast, your ship is the same as the Pirate Shortbow. It's a newer design, all silver with a front end that looks like a shovel head split down the middle. It's a cool design, but I never have reason to fly one. As for the pacifism thing. I've played a few merchants, but somehow they just don't hold my attention. Getting from 2 million to 10 million credits just doesn't get me that excited. Do you play as a merchant? What do find challenging/fun about it? I was thinking of doing a community challenge based around the merchant character, partly because it would force me to really play it. Ah, nice, I like the look of that ship! I don't play a "merchant" per se, but my playstyle constantly shifts among exploration, exploiting surplus/shortage rumors, running contracts, and pirating. When I get bored from one style I switch to another, depending on my mood, so there is some merchant-ness to my games at times. I do find it exciting to forgo a few extra units of water-fuel to cram a few more items in for a shortage, and pray to The Maker that I don't lose a sail or two in transit and risk a mutiny. Few things are as satisfying as breaking your personal record on profit from a single shortage, or as harrowing as trying to beat the clock on an old shortage rumor. _______________________________ "Issue the standard Cadar greeting, Ensign." Here's a pic. I was wrong, it's not actually the same as the shortbow, but similar to it. Attachments:

That's actually the exact design I was picturing, thanks for the screenshot! I'd be happy to fly that bird for sure, only thing it needs for my preferred playing style is a much larger cargo hold.

Yeah, it's a nice ship, but the crew and hold have kept me from buying it.
Oh, hey, are you going to play in the Dread Pirate Community Challenge? With your avatar and flavor text, you have no excuse for not being part of this!

I will give it a shot, I just don't know how much I'll be able to play. But you're right, my avatar doesn't really leave me an excuse, does it? I'll have to read the thread again to be clear on the rules and enter myself officially.
